Question

PP wants AE25 which I have, however I also have AE24 installed, so PP won't import AE files

What is particularly annoying is that opening projects I was working on, which were fine, suddenly require AE25 to "successfully import" the file.  Before they worked.  And I have AE25, however when installing it, I requested to keep the old version too, just in case some things didn't open properly in the new version (which has happened to me before with old compositions that then took weeks to sort out...)

So PP is now unusable with AE content for me.

What to do?

Hi, thanks for helping.  I had to move on, so uninstalled 24 for now.  If I need to install it for some reason, I'll be sure to test this.

Can you post a screenshot of the error message?

It's fine to have 25.x and 24.x installed at the same time, so there's probably something else causing the issue.

There's an issue where Edit Original when used in After Effects 25.x opens 24.x instead with an error message about 24.x not being able to open a 25.x project.  If that's what is happening, you'll have to manually open the 25.x AEP in Ae 25 until that gets fixed.

Just a quick update for anyone going through this thread:  Edit Original for movies with embedded project links was fixed in After Effects 25.4.

Right... but I have PR25 and AE25 both installed.  I can't see how to tell PR25 to "use" AE25, it just says it cannot import media as I have AE24 - which is true, however I also have AE24...

@wcn_dave

Quick answer:  Make sure the release version of After Effects matches the release version of Premiere Pro.  For example, if running Premiere Pro 24.6.x then use After Effects 24.6.x or if running Premiere Pro 25.2.x then use After Effects 25.2.x.

This also applies to the version of Media Encoder that should be used with Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Slightly longer answer:
Knowing which version of After Effects to use with which version of Premiere Pro had been a challenge for a long time.  To address this, the release version number of After Effects was changed to match the release version of Premiere Pro back when Premiere Pro 23.x was released.

If you're not sure which versions your running, this can be quickly checked in Creative Cloud Desktop.

And as @R Neil Haugen already pointed out, use Creative Cloud Desktop to install corresponding versions if needed.

Using the Creative Cloud desktop app, uninstall Pr25.x, open Ae 25, reinstall Pr 25
