Pref settings not working

I have Pref set to "Open Recent." My "most recent file" file is "1 Dec lights" but Pre opens "2 Dec Lights copy".   Why is Pre getting it wrong?

Try resetting the preferences:

thanks, it's worth a try but it feels like a sledgehammer.  All that tweaking , lost
