Question

premiere 2018 caption sidecar file .srt not accepted by vimeo

Vimeo clearly states that they accept .srt files for captions but for some reason adobe premiere's .srt files are not acceptable.

Anyone have any issues here? Seems this could be a big problem is this is a widespread issue.

Looking forward to feedback and results from others on this one.

Rick

Hey! 2020 and still having the exact same issue. Also found that opening the .srt file and removing all font formatting was an effective work-around - Vimeo then accepted and displayed the subtitles, whereas earlier the file was accepted but the titles didn't actually appear on screen.

Almost 2022 and still the same issue...

This is an old thread that was started regarding the pre-2021 caption workflow. But even then the issue was that Vimeo does not allow the use of styling in srt files. And PR allowed exporting srt files without styling.

For information regarding the current issues with sidecar files for Vimeo, see my post here:

    https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/srt-file-fonts-and-styles-does-not-carry-over-to-vimeo-cc-upload/m-p/12477108#M374360

That post makes the point that Vimeo recommends using VTT, but it does not note that PR won't export VTT.

    I had same issue.

My workaround is just use this:

1 - export your (.srt) file

2 - convert it to WebVT (.vtt) here

    https://subtitletools.com/convert-to-vtt-online

3 - upload this .vtt file in Vimeo

I found a work around with out have to use any third party software... I opened the .srt file exported by premiere in note pad. I was able to remove all the html syntax from the file by using the replace function and saved it. Then vimeo accepted the file and it worked great.

Was having the same problem with .srt, stripped font info as noted, and it worked for Vimeo.  Just wanted to add a wrinkle to this - I have another issue which is, my CC files do not have the right timing, my captions were all shifted the same amount (meaning, not a frame rate issue).  My solution was to add an empty CC at 0:00 to give the file a starting point, and that fixed it.  BUT, that empty CC was the cause of the .srt not being accepted.  That empty CC was the only line that had font info in it, so instead I manually entered a *spacebar* and that fixed it.

Yes I am also running into this issue. Has Adobe been alerted? Really, really inconvenient bug that is adding a ton of time to workflow.

Vimeo took my test .srt just fine. What kind of caption stream do you have in PR?

    Hello,

When I'm in premiere I'm selecting side car and then the srt option.

When I open the srt file and strip out all the font info then vimeo accepts the file. I wonder why my version is somehow inserting code that vimeo does not like?

    So weird.

What kind of caption stream do you have?

Yes, Vimeo choked on an .srt with font formatting.

My quick look suggests to me that they are allowing no formatting: color style position. More like closed captioning whether you specify it as CC or subtitle.

I have not experimented with their options enough. Let us know what you find.
