Premiere 2022 - Issue - Playback Goes White

Hi there,

I don't know about other people but Premiere Pro 2021 was the best working verison of PP I have ever used. Since upgrading to PP 2022 I have had nothing but issues once again. I feel like were back to the old PP everyone is used too, always crashing.

The main issue I wanted to discuss today is something that is happening when I apply a colour grade and then also apply an effect. When I do this the video will go to white screen however if I toggle off Lumtri then the effect works just fine and you can see the video.

I noticed this first when trying to use Neat Video with on a colour grade on a clip. The whole screen went white but if I turned off Lumtri it works just fine. I thought it may have been on Neat videos end however today I made two adjustment layers to make a simple zoom in transition and where the adjustment layers were for the 12 frames the video went completely white. I have tried nesting the clips to see if that would work but it did not.

I am wondering if this is happening to anyone else? If so, have you found a work around?

Thanks,

Josh

If anyone else is having this issue in the future. I found a simple fix. If you apply an effect such as Neat Video directly to the clip you need to make sure you apply lumtri colour afterward or underneath your effect. Unfortunately, if you are using adjustment layers to apply an effect such as a zoom in the only solution I have found so far it to apply your effect to the two clips without lumtri colour, export the file then replace your orginial files with the exported file and grade it from there, you lose some quality but so far it's the only solution I have found. Hope this helps!

Hi Josh,

Great that you found a solution for your white screen. Applying effects in a certain order can affect their look, for sure. I am sorry I didn't mention that as a possible troubleshooting step. You sharing your experience has helped the community a lot, though, so thanks for doing so.

Adjustment layers can be tricky when a combination of effects is involved, especially transitions (Cross Zoom), where render pipeline order comes into play. Nesting can sometimes workaround such issues.

Thanks,
Kevin

Have you tried nesting and applying Neat Video to the nest?

Yes, that was one of the first things I tried. It didn't work.

Hi Josh,

Sorry this is happening to you. One trick with deleting media cache is to choose File > Close All Projects, and then go to Preferences > Media Cache and then choose the second option in the dialog box to delete ALL media cache. Then it works great.

Other than that, it sounds like you may have some unresolved issues with your hardware. There are new NVIDIA drivers out if you have a PC. Give us full details about your computer and the media you are editing with and that will help a lot.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Okay, I just tried deleting the Cache again exactly how you said but unfortunately it didn't work. I am using the M1 Max. I don't believe it's an issue with the media I am using because I have tried different file types from multiple cameras and the problem is consistent throughout. I have a c70, c200, r6 and mavic 2 and no matter what clip I try it on I still have the issue.

Josh,

4K Footage and you are doing multilayered effects on M1? Scaling down the footage to HD perhaps? Sounds like you are overloading the graphics processing gear in the Mac you are working with. You may need something more powerful for your intended workflow OR your workflow needs adjustment.

Maybe you can start by transcoding these clips to a bonafide editing codec, like ProRes and try a sample workflow first.

If that makes no difference, I think it boils down to effects and the way you are creating them, and perhaps, your machine is not powerful enough for what you wish to do.

For example, you may want to add some effects to a submaster or construct your effects differently - use a single adjustment layer, for example, if possible. Another way is you can transcode footage with a one light LUT and add noise reduction for clips, then send them as a batch in Media Encoder for anything technical, then bring them back into Premiere Pro for graphics treatment, video effects or color effects which would save graphics cycles and a quality loss that would probably be undetectable.

A good number of things you can try in being more "compact" in how you construct effects. Sorry the M1 seems not very capable when it comes to graphics processing. Very disappointing, so I'm sorry for that. Return with questions.

Thanks,
Kevin

Try upgrading your GPU Driver, and clear your cache ( Edit > Preferences > Media Cache Files > Delete )
