Premiere not rendering Darken blending mode

  • Issue: I’m trying to create a karoke video. I’ve inserted my music tracks, graphics with the background and lyrics. When I insert progress bars, a yellow bar should progress across a blue background. Since the bar is set to Darken (see screenshots) the yellow should be invisible against the blue and only darken the white text. But instead of Darkening,  it is multiplying, turning the blue bar green. Screenshots and rendered video attached.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 24.3.0 (build 59)
  • Operating system: Mac OS Sonoma 14.1 (23B74)
  • System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
    • CPU: Apple M1 Max

    • GPU and Driver Version: NA

    • RAM: 64GB

    • Hard Drive: 2TB APPLE SSD AP2048R

  • Video format: I’m rendering music and graphics into a karaoke track
  • Workflow details: n/a
  • Steps to reproduce: See attached
  • Expected result: Since yellow is lighter than blue, the blue should have remained blue while white turns yellow.
  • Actual result: The blend mode rendered as Multiply, not Darken.

Your post inspired me to create a tutorial on how to make a karaoke text effect. You might find it helpful: Watch it here.

Even with the Darken blend mode, the background color will change.

Both Darken and Multiply modes darken the image, but with different calculations. Multiply will always result in a darker color compared to Darken.

With both blending modes, the only color that will not change the underlying layer is white.

Hi DemSign,

If you are trying to create a Karaoke video in Premiere Pro and not After Effects there is an easier way to do so using the tint effect and a mask with a mask path mapped to the white part of your text.

I am not sure how your project is set up but just using a shape and the title tool with the Tint effect can accomplish what you are going for. I have attached a screengrab of the basic project layers and effect to achieve this. There are also some good tutorials on the Internet that give more insight on how to make something like this in Premiere Pro. Good luck
