Premiere Pro (2017) keeps crashing because of still pictures

I'm using Adobe Premiere 2017 11.0.0 (154) editing on a large project. The projects keeps crashing. It seems it happens almost every time I scrub past a still picture (jpeg). I have tried downsizing the images, but it still keeps crashing. The images are imported normally, and standard duration is set to five seconds. However, the full length of the images when you open them in the viewer seems to be 12 hours.

It leaves me with two questions:

Is there an option recommended for using stills in Premiere Pro that I can convert to?

Are there any other options to avoid this timeconsuming problem?

Hope someone are able to help!

Best regards

Christian

Correct answer SamDogDigital

I thought the max that Premiere would reasonably handle was 4k photos.

In case of needing to work with larger resolutions, I will animate the move in AE and import results back into Premiere.

We have a project that has shown the same issue.  In 2017.0.2 scrubbing through big stills crashes.  XML back to 2015 and the project is stable.

Looking for the smoking gun.

I've tried downsizing the images. However, the problem persists. I've worked on this project for years, but only after installing CC 2017 11.0.1.(6) did Premiere Pro start crashing.

Any other suggestions?

Go back to the version it did work without issues and finish project before updating/grading.

I have had issues with large stills/jpgs/png even psd.

Downsized them to framesize then they worked ok.

On a side note you cannot import jpg that are cmyk only rgb.

Have you tried applying the update to 2017.0.1?  Might be some bug fixes in there that will help.

Thanks! I'll try that.

Here's the thing - people sometimes use very large images because they need to "zoom and pan" within the still image - think of a Ken Burns documentary. In that case, you need the extra resolution (the still is larger than video frame). However, if not animating the photos, large images just bog down the system needlessly.

If working in a 1920x1080 sequence, and not animating images, best practice would be to resize/crop them to 1920x1080 in Photoshop before importing into Premiere, and avoid headaches in editing. Even if you are animating stills, don't make the images any larger than needed to achieve the motion. 5472x3648 is really large.

Thanks

Hi Christian,

What is the resolution of the images, in pixels? Make sure all jpegs used RGB color and not CMYK.

Thanks

Jeff

Hi Jeff. The resolution varies. Here are a few: 5472x3648 in a file that is jpg and 5.8 megabytes. Another is 2500x1631 and 3.9 mb.
