Hey all -
Recently I have been experiencing severe lag issues when trying to run Premiere Pro 2020. I've tried multiple ways to troubleshoot this myself. The steps I took are below:
- Restarted computer (probably 20 times now)
- Did a factory reset on my Mac
- NVRAM reset
- Deleted and re-downloaded Premiere
- Deleted unused media cache files
- Factory reset on Premiere
The last attempt seemed to work yesterday but this morning, when trying to load up some projects, I'm having the same issues. What typically happens is I try to make any edit, open preferences, really anything, and I get the spinning wheel of death. When I close Premiere it causes all other apps on my computer to run slow and if I try to open up Premiere again the icon just bounces.
I'm using a 2017 iMac Pro / 3.2 HGz 8-Core Intel Xeon W / 64GB 2666 MHz DDR4 / Radeon Pro Vega 64 16GB
Thanks!

I'm having similar issues also with similar specs. Bought the computer in October, brand new because I knew I had some larger 4k projects that were bogging down my Mac Pro 2013. Well unfortunately after troubleshooting with myself and a Mac professional we seemed to link the issue to Premiere. It starts with Premiere. It slows down and becomes unresponsive. Then this issue daisy chains to all other applications on my computer and eventually I just have to shut down (if my computer doesn't kernel panic). I've tried Premiere Pro 14.6 and 14.7, tried Catalina and Big Sur so far and both OSes with multiple users have the issue.
JC do you have a RAID drive involved, or no?

It's 100% Premiere. I created a new project and haven't had the issue since. I still haven't been able to nail down what exactly corrupted my project. I'm assuming it was one of the files I had imported. I was able to copy and paste the first project into the new one. Let me know if that works for you.

I can re-create the issue* with any project at this point on both premiere 14.6 and 14.7, and I can use the same project with the same files on Premiere Pro on my Macbook Pro right next to me. It works just fine on that. I tried troubleshooting with Adobe's tech support and we also tried a fresh install of Premiere from the website in fresh documents and application folder.
*The issue is either a kernel panic or the cascade effect of any open programs turning non-responsive. Eventually the whole computer including finder gets so slow it is unusable until restart. Clicks can take 30 seconds to 1 minute (or more) to respond, even with the activity monitor saying my CPU is running idle with only 1% background processes.
I am waiting to hear back on Apple's side.

I had a problem with After Effects causing these issues do to inflating my system with massive caches. See if you can clear the cache for Premier – perhaps it's a similar issue.
