Premiere Pro 23.5 Performance Issues

Seriously, what is going on? FCP, After FX etc all run fine. Premiere squeezes the processor so hard my mac wants to explode, even with loading audio waveforms. It is so ridiciulously slow, laggy and full of bugs! I used to create 4k graphics in After FX with YouTube in the background, emails going off, etc. Why can't I edit 1080 footage?

It struggles scrubbing through 1 minute of 1080p footage. I have 64GB RAM, 4.2 Quad Core i7, SSD, etc. It hates everything as soon as Premiere is opened.

1080 x 1920 sequences are so sluggish you can't do anything.
If you make a colour matte from the top menu, it doesn't exist, you have to make it from the project window.
Today - all my keyframes from yesterday have disppeared.
All my grades after an update disappeared.
Rendering causes weird glitches.
Export looks vastly different to what's on the timeline.
Constant lag.
Constant freezing.
Constant crashes.
It will freeze video and continue playing audio, while disabling ability to stop it doing this.

Hello @Fantomas100,

Thanks for the message. I work in support. I hope to help you. I don't see these issues on my own system and they are not widespread. I believe that most of your problems can be overcome by troubleshooting steps and by optimizing media. It appears you're having performance issues, mainly. Let's try and troubleshoot those first.

Sounds odd. Can the community get a bit more info?

  • Choose Help > System Compatibility Report. Are any issues listed?
  • Which model of Intel CPU do you have? Does it have Quick Sync?
  • What kind of GPU?
    • If NVIDIA, which driver is installed?
  • Are the SSD drives very full?
  • What is the source footage?
    • Is it H.264 or HEVC?
    • Does the footage have variable frame rates? Is it 10-bit, 4:2:2 footage?
      • Variable frame rate footage from recorded streaming media, or media captured on mobile devices and drones can often cause a multitude of performance issues.
      • Footage that is H.264 or HEVC that is 4:2:2 and 10-bit is also very problematic in any CPU less than an 11th gen or better CPU. Use an i9 Intel CPU with Quick Sync to edit the footage natively.
        • Transcoding to editing codecs or using an editing codec in proxies (avoid H.264 proxies) can greatly reduce performance issues with such footage and with less powerful CPUs.
        • You can use Media Encoder, or if Media Encoder doesn't work, use freeware Shutter Encoder to optimize your media. ProRes or ProRes LT is recommended.
        • Note: these file sizes are large but can be deleted after finishing your project.
      • If GPU requirements are unmet or are in question, and you are using H.264 or HEVC footage, you can disable hardware accelerated decoding in Preferences > Media. See if that might alleviate your issue with performace and such footage.

What troubleshooting steps have you taken?

  • When updating, it's a great idea to reset media cache, delete preferences, and address plug-ins issues (if applicable).
  • Press Shift and launch the application to get the Reset Options dialog box.
    • Choose to delete Media Cache.
    • Choose to Reset Preferences.
  • Do you use plug-ins?
    • Use Reset Options to launch without Plug-ins as a troubleshooting step.
    • With Reset Options, you can also rebuild the plug-ins loading cache as a troubleshooting step.
  • Choose these options in the Reset Options dialog box. Relaunch Premiere Pro.
  • If troubleshooting steps do not help, projects and sequences can become corrupt when updating versions. You can address this in a few ways.
    • Sequences: copy/paste the content into a new sequence.
    • If addressing sequence corruption does not help, you can address project corruption:
      • Create a new project.
      • Import the older project into the new one.

Yes. You can't create any of the synthetics from the File Menu if the Project panel is not selected. I believe this behavior has always been that way. It would help if the documentation addressed the issue. Instead it typically instructs you to use the New Item button in the Project panel: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/creating-special-clips-synthetics.html

I have filed a documentation bug on your behalf and will advocate for a fix. The product should also throw a warning, and I will let the product team know about this as well by filing a bug there too. Sorry about this.

Today - all my keyframes from yesterday have disppeared.

I moved your post on this thread to a bug report. I will make sure that the product team knows about this bug. I apologize for that. I hope that this issue can be fixed ASAP.

All my grades after an update disappeared.

Usually, that is due to your LUTs being stored in the wrong location. There is a lot of bad info on the internet concerning where to install LUTs. Could that be the case?

If that is not the case, please let the community know. Let's look at these issues that you also mentioned.

Export, performance, and scaling issues similar to what you mentioned can be traced to the GPU. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, that company released faulty drivers for a number of months in late 2022 to early 2023. Let us know if updating to the latest studio drivers helps you.

Let us know if your project is working better after considering these steps. Very sorry for the frustration on all these issues.

Thanks,
Kevin

I'm having a serious problem with 23.5 needing to render after every edit change. Essential graphics are super slow as well.

Hey @edit58989569,

I got your message. We need more info about your computer system. The more info, the better. Can we get that? I hope the community can assist.

Thanks,
Kevin
