Question

Premiere pro 24.3.0 scrubbing lags when playback resolution is set different to full

If I scrub through my timeline and set the playback resolution in the program monitor to full, it works fine. If I set the playback resolution to anything other than full, such as 1/2 or 1/4, the playback lags and freezes.
In playback, it is the opposite: lagging at full and smooth at 1/2 or 1/4, so I always have to change the playback resolution to full when scrubbing and to 1/4 when playing.

Scrub fine at full and lag at 1/4. How is this possible? Is this a bug?

Footage:
From a DJI Avata drone, exported from Gyroflow and pasted into a timeline with the same specs as the footage. The timeline is 1 minute long.

Test with all effects off.

Media Cache on SSD
Footage on HD

Software:
Premiere Pro 24.3.0

PC:

Prozessor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900K 3.00 GHz
RAM 128 GB
Systemtyp 64-Bit-Betriebssystem, x64-basierter Prozessor
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

I always tell people to leave them set to Full. In AE, they work as intended, in PP, I only see issues with it not set to full along with High Quality Playback from the Wrench menu.

I had same issue on fully loaded MacBookPro M4 with footage on SSD connected via Thunderbolt. Finally figured it out - SSD was formatted exfat. Reformatted as APFS and problem solved. Hope this helps those with scrubbing issue on Mac.

Try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

Thank you, but I've already tried everything:

Audio hardware and set input to None: same problem
Clear all cache etc: same problem
Creating a new project with just this one clip, no effects, nothing: same problem

What helps are proxies or moving the footage to SDD, but that is not the point. I don't understand why scrubbing lags at 1/4 playback resolution and is fine at 1/1 resolution.

So I think this must be a bug in Premier's handling of playpack resolution. A full resolution playback does not stress my machine, but a 1/4 resolution playback freezes the scrubbing.
When I scrub with full resolution I see in the taskmanager on the HD reading ~ 80-100 MB/s, when I scrub with 1/4 resolution I see in the taskmanager on the HD reading: ~6 MB/s for the first few seconds, then scrubbing freezes at 0 MB/s
So I think something is wrong with the playback resolution system.

I'm not looking for a solution or workarounds (SSD, proxies). Yes, I use these workarounds when I can no longer go on.

But I aspect that a software that can scrub at 1/1 resolution can also do this at 1/4 resolution. That is all 😉

Might want to put your highly compressed footage on a SSD instead of a HDD.

Or consider using proxies.

I am familiar with the workflows you mention and have been using them for a long time - before the machine I mentioned above. Thank you for your well-intentioned advice. But that's not my point.

The point is: it works fine at full playback resolution, but lags at 1/4 playback resolution. Strange!

As I said, the scrubbing works fine at full resolution, only at 1/2 resolution does it lag/freeze.

I wouldn't even care if it wasn't for the fact that full doesn't work during playback and I have to switch back to 1/2.

Yes, I could use proxies and/or put video files on SDD temporarily while editing, etc.

But I suspect there is something wrong with Premiere. It's odd that scrubbing works fine at full playback resolution, but lags/freezes at 1/4.
