Premiere Pro and After Effects Crashing Issues: "Replace with After Effects Composition" on MAC

I am currently working on a project in Premiere Pro Version 22.6.2 and trying to add effects to one clip with the "Replace with After Effects Composition" to link it to After Effects. However, every time I try this After Effects and/or Premiere Pro both crash, and I have have to force quit the applications.

I am using After Effects 22.6.0. In my creative cloud I do not see an update for After Effects so I am assuming that's not the issue. Also, I tried creating proxies but that didn't seem to make a difference either. The computer I use is a Mac Mini macOS Monterey Version 12.5.1.

Based on the information I gave, does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks!

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:

If that doesn't work, try resetting the preferences:

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:

If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

Hi there,

Popping in this thread in June 2025 with Premiere v 25.2.3 (Build 4) and none of the "Correct Answer" options in this thread worked for me.

I simultaneously came across this other thread about a new .prin file Premiere was creating alongside the project file, as I was curious what it was...

And after I turned off the "Analyze all imported media..." option in the prefrences, the replace with AE Composition started working again.

Posting in case this helps others!

Oh my gosh you're a life saver. I've been banging my head against the wall for the past hour trying everything I could find. Don't know what the point of "Media Analysis" is if it's just going to clutter my project folder and kill one of Premiere and After Effects best features

In my situation the only thing that worked was stopping to use Premiere and AE version 23.6 and switching to 24.3, I tried all suggestions from Peru Bob (thanks man), but they didn't work.
When I had this problem I had both versions (23.6 and 24.3) of Premiere and AE installed so my best guess is that Premiere had some faulty links when trying to understand which version of AE to connect to.

Also, just try and reboot the mac, I know it's obvious but that solved the problem for me after spending an hour trying other solutions

Thank you! Not sure if it was resetting the workpace or setting the Audio Hardware Input to None, but one of the last two suggestions worked. I tried deleting the cache and resetting the preferencees first, which did not work.
