Premiere Pro CC 2019 -- Editing From SSD External Drive is Slow

I'm fairly new to Adobe editing and it could be that my setup preferences in Adobe are not correct. I am using a windows 10 laptop for editing a very simple 30 minute 1080p mp4 video file that is located on a external Crucial 256gb SSD drive.

In my settings I set Adobe Premiere to use the project location on  the same external SSD the video file resides on.

After editing and making cuts I have found that the playback of the video becomes very delayed in it's initial start. For example I have to wait about 5 seconds before it even starts to playback the video after pressing the play button. It is pretty snappy in the first few minutes of editing, but after about 10-15 minutes of applying cuts it starts to slow down in waiting for playback.

I have 32gb of RAM and 8GB AMD Radeon card. Will leave all the specs listed below.

I also have all the settings in Scratch Disk set to "Same as project". Is this the correct way or best way? Is this what is causing it to be slow in response to begin playback? If I click to a certain point on the video timeline it takes a while for it to update in the viewer as well.

I am using external SSD because I'm trying to save drive space on my internal SSD on the laptop.

It has also crashed several times on me when making ripple deletes.

What do I need to do to setup Adobe to work right on external drives? I am up  to date on the latest in AMD graphics card driver.

Thank you for helping me understand.

Gary

I just used Premiere Pro CC 2018 for an hour long video with MANY cuts and did not experience this problem with long delays before playback begins. Adobe team I hope you are aware of this particular issue with playback in CC 2019 and are looking into it. Thank you.

Hi gabriel_roni,

Sorry for the performance issues. I've been there. Many people have an easier time once they delete media cache. Can you try that? FAQ: How to clean (delete or trash) media cache files?

Let us know if it works or not.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, tried that already. I just used CC 2018 for editing an hour long 720HD mp4 and had a bunch of cuts. No problems.

However, I also set every folder to be based on the external SSD, including the media cache and media cache database, and it worked really good.

I have not yet tried pointing all the media cache's to the external SSD for a new project with CC 2019 yet, but I will soon as I start our next project.

Thanks again for the suggestion. Will keep you updated when I edit on CC 2019 with new media cache locations to external SSD.

I too have had the same issues with PP. Working on a project for two years now and this problem, playback takes 15 seconds or more, started this summer with one of the updates to PP.

Editing from an external Thunderbolt the entire time -- was not a problem at all until July.

Yes Mark. I agree that it appears to be a problem with Adobe and not the computers fault. I have the same problem editing lower resolution 720p videos.

I do not have this problem using Lightworks. So, this is why I believe it has something to do with Adobe's software.

My edits are simple cuts, and although there are a lot of them in the 30 minutes of video it should not get bogged down and have to wait several seconds for playback to start at any place on the timeline. I have simple FX applied such as audio filters (compression, limiter and noise reduction).

Even if I turn off the adjustment layer for the video FX it still does it. Again, this only seems to happen after making a lot of cuts. I have not tried this out on videos shorter than 30 minutes yet to see if it occurs on those.

Hope someone finds a solution for this.

The internal C Drive is 500GB SSD with 213GB left. The external 256GB Crucial has 233GB free space left. Plenty for both drives.

Are you editing with the power cord connected? If not, the processor may be throttling back.

Have you tried using proxies?

Thanks Peru for the suggestion. However, power cord is plugged in and proxies should not be needed with the system I am running. It also occurs with 720p videos. Something very easy for a computer to edit. This is a problem I believe somewhere in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019 (and even 2018) - because it occurred in that version too.

All the USB ports on the laptop are USB3.

I have discovered if I take the same video file and start a whole new project that playback is instant no matter where I start on the timeline. This appears to be happening after making cuts to the video over an extended period of time.

I don't know, but I'm guessing is it a cache issue? AMD graphics issue? I can select CPU only for mercury playback and it still happens.

Thanks for the suggestions.

How full are the hard drives?

What size is the C drive?

How is that external drive connected?

USB2 is not fast enough for video editing

USB3 or eSata will usually work for video editing
