Premiere Pro dpx based project, EDL export failure

I’m working on a short film made in 16mm film. The film was scanned in DPX image files. By default

Premiere imported this DPX files as an “Image Sequence” creating a virtual clip. Now I need to export a EDL file of the final cut for grading, but Premiere's EDL doesn’t reference the original DPX files. What does instead is creating an edit list of the “Image Sequence” edit points but not of the raw files, which makes everything to show offline.

How can I export this DPX image sequence as a working EDL? I’ve been trying to solve this for 2 weeks but I’m still lost, any ideas?

When transferring between Premiere and Resolve use XML, not EDL.  XML contains much more useful data.

First, import your raw DPX image sequence(s) directly into Resolve, completely independent of Premiere.

Now, export your edited timeline from Premiere -- as Final Cut Pro XML

Then, import your XML into Resolve:

          File/Import/Timeline....

          Choose your xml sequence.

When the Load XML window comes up, this is crucial:

Untick Automatically import source clips into media pool

Click OK.

Your edited timeline should now appear in Resolve with the DPX sequence relinked to match your edits.

Thanks smrpix!

Really hope this works!!

How should I properly import a raw DPX image sequence into Resolve? I guess this is what makes it link to the actual footage.
I only managed to import all the single frames, but isn’t a proper Image Sequence. Is this the right way to import the DPX files?Im not a Resolve user, so its a struggle just to navigate the menus and options, maybe you can help me.

Thanks!

Hi @danaxia,

I heard back from the team and here's what they offered:

  • EDLs don’t reference file names. They are built to use Tape Name (aka Reel) and Timecode to locate the frames at a given point in time.
  • DPX frames can support timecode and reel name metadata, so those should be written into the EDL.
    • Is this metadata embedded in your DPX files?
  • It’s true though, both the sending application (Premiere Pro) and whatever is reading it needs to understand the concept of an image sequence.
  • What’s missing from your description of the problem is:
    • What are you using to import the EDL into, where “makes everything to show offline” is happening?

I hope their feedback can help you get your conform done. If not, please let me know what other info that needs to be exchanged to assist you with that. I hope I can help you.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks to you, and the team for taking the time to look into this.
I checked the original DPX file’s Metadata, and they are blank under Tape Name, so I guess that information is not available to conform the EDL properly. No embedded Metadata in the DPX files is clearly an issue.
I’m delivering a conform to grading in DaVinci Resolve, I use my own version of Resolve to test the EDL and that’s where the footage is offline.
I tried to add the Tape Name/Reel information in Premiere, but that doesn’t seem to edit the original DPX file’s Metadata.
Is there anyway to edit the Metadata of the original scan inside Premiere? If not, which app can I use to add the Tape Name to the original DPX file’s Metadata?
Again, thanks for your time!
D.
