Premiere Pro Freeze Stutter on Mac M2 Ultra

Hi, i'm editing Prores LT Footage on PP in Mac M2 Ultra. But performance are really low. Timline freeze and stutter for 5 seconds every minute. I have opened Activity Monitor and shows that 95% of system is inactive during premiere pro running.  I tried both fullscreen editing and windowed, same.

The footage i'm editing is on a External SSD T7 Samsung. The file size is about 500GB.

But i'm sure is a problem with the Ultra since i tried to editing the same footage with same SSD in a Mac Mini M1, and it was flawless. It was loosing audio playback aswell and gave me some Audio 00 errors every minute or so. Problem seem to worsen when i try to cut in fast mode, like 2x 4x velocity of timeline.

If i put 1/4 the quality is a bit better, but still not ideal. I had to move back to windows to finish the editing.

Tried both Beta and 23.0 version.

I did apple check, and hardware is ok.

Any help? Thank you.

we have the same issue in Premiere — stutterrring and laggy on a MacBook Pro M2pro under macOS Ventura — weird thing is that it works just fine on the MacBook Pro with M1pro + external 4K monitor.

in another forum — a user said this only happens when two monitors are involved — since the M2 is a laptop — and we're using an external 4K monitor — the external 4K monitor is the second monitor, since the built-in display on the laptop counts too.

this seems like an issue with Premiere not being able to handle two displays on mac M2 silicon.

however, this makes our fancy new M2 machine pretty useless for using Premiere. 🙄

anyone else experiencing this?

thank you.

Have you tried reducing the entire workspace smaller than your screen as suggested here:

It worked for me after experience laggy playback of prores footage on an M2 Ultra.

thanks for me is the same, only beta version now is getting a little bit better, but still premiere lags and stops a lot on the timeline, is not smooth editing. They need to rewrite the software.

I have experimented, and with h264 footage it goes well. But with prores after a while it starts to lag and become from snappy to slow in seconds. Then 16 min for a export in prores to h264 20 min long in 1080p should not take all this time with a m2 Ultra.

I'm experiencing the same issue.  What's weird is when I toggle full screen playback, that plays back perfectly.  Buttry smooth.  While at the time, the playback within the Program monitor window above the timeline remains choppy.  I've tried uninstalling, renstalling, installing a previous version, and launching in Intel mode instead of apple silicon.  Nothing changes the choppy playback within the program window.

I'm having the exact same issue!  I'm on a Studio M2 Ultra, 60 core GPU, 128GB unified memory on Ventura 13.4.1 and using PP 23.5 (the latest version). I had the exact same issue where full screen playback through Transmit was perfect on any screen I toggled it on, but the playback in the program monitor above the timeline is super choppy and unwatchable. I went through all the standard troubleshooting workflows and nothing was helping.  I'm working with a 3 extrenal monitor set up:  As a test, I unplugged two of the monitors and it made the issue go away.  ARE ANY OF YOU WITH THE ISSUE WORKING WITH MULTIPLE MONITORS?  Please test this out.  We might be able to get a bug identified and a fix in the pipeline.
