Pro CC Can't Handle mp4 Files After Latest Windows 10N Update

Hi All

Longtime lurker, first-time poster.

So I made a mistake, long ago, don't judge me, and got Windows 10N, which for reasons unknown comes without media support.

That's fine, you can always add the 10N Media Feature Pack.

But after the latest "Creator Update", mp4 files import OK but then the video doesn't play. Audio only.

(The irony of "Creator Update" stopping us editing a Xmas video in Premiere was not lost on us.

Why does Microsoft think it has anything to do with Creativity anyway? Couldn't they just focus on providing a robust platform for creative software?)

I have re-installed the last media pack (1703), nothing.

I have installed the latest, 1709, nowt.

I have re-installed Quicktime, nada.

I have un-installed Premiere, run that Cleaner thing, deleted the cache files and that folder in User\Common.

I have spent most of bloody Christmas on this forum and am now in sleep-deprived despair.

I equally hate Microsoft, Adobe, and people who say "mp4 is a wrapper!"

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get camera phone mp4 files to work in the best video editor?

Am I alone in wondering why mp4 support isn't built into what is an expensive product?

VLC can handle mp4 of any time, and it is a 20MB file and free.

The kid has now edited his song himself on a mate's laptop, and look at it!

They haven't got the sync function, so one of the audio tracks is out of sync.
it's horrible.
Please help me, and help me rescue Christmas.

    Feature Request/Bug Report Form

The more VFR support is requested, the more likely Adobe will consider it.

Windows 10N is a European version that doesn't include Media support, following a punitive fine from the EU.

(Painful for me to accept as a Remainer.)

The Media update normally fixes this, but there has been a problem with this update for the 1709 Windows 10N update.

I rolled this update back, and disabled Features updates via Group Policy (to stop it immediately re-installing).

System is now working fine again, although I'm very cross about the loss of several days.

It would be handy is Pro could handle mp4 files, but I guess general consumers aren't Adobe's market for Premiere Pro.

However, I suspect this will have affected Elements users too.

    Thanks Bob

I agree I could re-render everything, but that seems an odd way to work.

I suspect adobe might not agree their product isnt suitable for non-professionals, maybe they'll reply soon.

I have "regular" Win10 and have never heard of Windows 10N... but for help with Windows, Search http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

    >camera phone mp4 files

MP4 **is** just a wrapper... and Premiere Pro very often has problems with cell phone video

Use the https://handbrake.fr/ open source transcoder/converter to convert to a file that PPro will edit

"MP4 **is** just a wrapper... and Premiere Pro very often has problems with cell phone video"

Hee hee, I knew someone would say that.

But aren't smartphones what most people use to capture video?

Shouldn't a high-end video editing package be able to cope with mp4 when(free) VIC can?

Can anyone recommend a good alternative to ProCC?

I bought it for the sync-ing, but I'd happily go back to clapperboards if could have software that could handle the most popular format.

    Not professionally, no.
