Proxy Workflow: export using proxies?

I see that when using the Proxy workflow, it still uses the full-resolution media on exports. That's great for the final cut, but when exporting rough cuts it really makes the exports take a whole lot longer - 3x longer on my tests. Would be great if that was an option left up to the user whether to export using proxies of full res media - instead of doing some workaround where I change the location of the original media to force it to export with proxies.

Test export - 3 minute 4k sequence with scaled 5k R3Ds (proxies are 1080p ProRes Proxy)

Proxy export (1080p mp4) - 5:55

Original media export (1080p mp4) - 15:05

Yes, export will currently always use Full Res if Full Res and Proxy clips are Online. The other possible workaround is to select all clips in the Project panel or Sequence, right-click and select Make Offline. This will also make all Full Res clips Offline, which will force export of Proxy.

We tried to the supported workflow functionality and known limitations in our documentation, understanding that we could not possibly cover all workflows in this release. There is an open feature request to select what you would like to export, without using Offline workarounds. I will add your name to it.

Yeah, that’s a common frustration. By default, most editors force full res for exports. If you just need quick rough cuts, a manual proxy only export option would save tons of time without messy workarounds.

I just ran into this issue this morning and discovered this thread. Any luck adding this feature? Giving the option to export using proxy media should be a no brainer...  the whole point of using proxies is to work faster.  I'm exporting a two and a half hour interview string for the director to watch and it originally told me it would take 6 hours. They shot 6K RED footage ( don't ask) and I'm working with 1080p Pro Res Proxies. The option to use the Proxy media would be very nice.

    There is a workaround.

Select the original media, right-click and make offline.

The Premiere can use the proxy media for export.

Then make the media online again.

+1 for the choice of export using proxies

+1 to simplifying the preset choice/creation

However I did manage to get my preset built in AME & copied to right location & proxy implementation is very good indeed. I use it for AVCIntra multicam sources & have my timeline set to render to my delivery codec (ProRes) so I get to edit with AVCI whilst proxies are created in background, then get a smoother edit once proxies are created, as edit gets closer to fine cut I render the sequence and see full res again. Very nice.

please add my name to the list. This would be an easy check box on the export window.

That is an excellent solution, an option in the Export Settings dialog to choose Original or Proxy.

Just make sure Original is set by default, and must be manually changed for every export.  (We don't want any accidents on this one.)

    Add my name, too.
