Relink media clip to sequence?

Is there a way to link an offline clip to a sequence instead?

I used a pretty cool transcription service call Trint, where I could highlight the transcription and get exactly that part of the video. They can export an EDL file, but that's using the movie I uploaded to their service. But that movie comes from a sequence I have in Premiere where there are multiple audio sources and cuts already. In other words, I'd like to point the offline media that's specified in the EDL to a sequence instead of a clip.

OK, thanks. Doesn't sound like the workflow I'm describing is possible in Premiere. I'm more used to After Effects where nested sequences (or comps in AE) is common. Thanks for the help!

reneed16328987lunarboy73 Hang on now... This IS possible! But you'll have to take a roundtrip through After Effects first.

I'm calling this solution the "EDL Nest Retention" workflow.

Buckle up. Here's how it's done:

  1. Import your EDL into Premiere Pro CC (unless it's possible to import EDL's directly into AE? My research says no.)
  2. Copy your master EDL Timeline to the clipboard [CMD/CTRL+ C]
  3. Launch a new After Effects project. Paste the master EDL Timeline (from your clipboard) into the empty project panel. [CMD/CTRL + V]
    • Doing this will also paste all the timeline's dependencies into AE.
  4. Select all of your source clips (ie- .mp4, .avi, etc.) in the AE project panel and [Right Click > Replace with x Comps]
    • x = the number of clips you've selected
  5. Select the master EDL Timeline (or "comp" bc we're inside AE now) and copy to the clipboard. [CMD/CTRL+ C]
  6. Back in Premiere Pro now... PASTE your results into the project panel.
  7. Enjoy the newly separated clips in your timeline.   Each one should now be represented as a nest inside of the master Timeline.

Why is This Useful?

One word... multicam. (that's 1 word, right?)

You can multicam each clip in the nest and switch cameras on the fly in your master timeline.

(especially useful if each clip represents an interview in your master EDL timeline).

Additional notes:

  • Using this method will make your Project in Premiere Pro a bit messy. Consider using "CUT" to clipboard instead of "COPY".
  • Don't use the "Replace with AE Composition" in Premiere Pro. The technique will still work... but it leaves Premiere Pro with a consolidated clip that's unchangeable from there.
  • I figured this solution out after banging my head against many walls, checking extendscript docs, and trying out a LOT of different things. This is the best I could come up with.
  • If anyone can figure out how to automate this with Extendscript... I would be SO grateful. I've been trying myself but it'll take a while to get it right.

Hope it helps!

I'm afraid I've done a terrible job of explaining my original question. And I'm grateful for the answers so far. I'm hoping this visual will help.

I have a sequence with multiple edits which I exported to a low-res MP4 for transcription. This service allows me to highlight words and sentences in the transcript and then output an EDL based on those highlights. (Awesome for interview footage which is what this is.) When I import that EDL back into the original Premiere project, the edits are based on the low-res MP4, which is not in the project. I'd like to relink those edits pointing to the MP4 to its original sequence instead. Possible? It might not be. And I hope I've explained myself better. Thank you!

You're imported EDL is creating a second sequence.  There's no way to connect that sequence to the first.  What you'd do is replace the low res proxy media used by the EDL sequence with the original media.  Do this from the bins with a right click, Replace Media.

This will make your first sequence irrelevant, though. Nothing you can do about that.

It might help to place the movie that you exported in the top most track of your Sequence, superimposed at 15% Scale (give or take) and positioned to a corner of the frame.  You could also disable it, but it would probably be helpful to have it there as a visual reference while  you're working.

You can only relink media to clips in the bin.  Doing so should naturally give you the results you want.

Thanks. Unfortunately that doesn't really help me because my sequences contain edits. I suppose the workaround would be to export those sequences, but then that's a ton of new media and therefore more HDD space.

Your edits won't change by relinking to new media.
