Question

renaming / pre-watching / organizing video clips

Hello.
I have a generic videographer question:

I like to bring all the folders with different footage into one folder that would become a project folder.
Then I like to ensure that clips are in the right order and to rename them before importing them into any video editing software that I may use.

How do you quickly watch (or skip through) individual clips, close file, rename file and open the next one?
How do you being your work flow?

I also do this operation so I can delete bad footage and not clutter my bins or worry about storing all the crap on my HD with the project.
What would be the most efficient way to do the prelimenary sorting, re-naming and pre-watching operation?

Thank you.

Why is F2 - rename not working in Premiere (or in Illistrator)?
It would make so much sense if it did.

If you are using a mac, the preview option with a spacebar is a great option

Christian.Z, I am using a PC.

====

Am I the only person who finds it difficult to import folders with video clips in such a way that each folder would automatically become a bin, in Prelude?

I like to organize my clips and rename them and place them into folders before I begin editing.
This function would be really nice.

very very good ✌️

I also suggest using Prelude. I wish they'd update that app, because the functionality of it is SO useful for combing through media for the nuggets to actually use.

Neil, it would be extremely helpful to have it on hand. But, now, you really need to pump Bridge or Prelude in order to interest users in the relevance of products. Then they will be in demand, and not gathering dust in the basket. Raise the topic with the developers and let them start developing the product, I'm sure they have a future. The following functions will be in great demand:

1) Cloning projects with MD5 mapping;

2) copying, renaming and moving;

3) cropping extra frames directly from applications to save hard disk space;

4) uploading directly cropped frames to Premiere and AE and etc.

We need to create.

I tried implementing boith Predulde and Bridge in my workflow.
There are things about both tools that are very convenient and not very convenient at the same time.
I wish that I could get some kind of a mix between the two.

I like them both, yet there is room for improvement for the developers, in my opinion.

I would like to be able to select next clip using some keys like "up/down" arrows, view it in increments using "left/right" arrows like in the MPC-HC media player, I would like to be able to adjust those increments without going into settings.
I would like to be able to throw markers here and there, as I scroll down, to be able to use in Prelude later.
Maybe some rough editing, like in Premiere Rush - why not combine Prelue and Rush.
An option to trim parts of clips, put them in a kind of a "recycle bin" and then permanently delete this information, producing smaller files would really be nice, in my opinion.
I definitely would like to rename files so they maintain order 001,002,003, etc, yet so I can replace the complicated camera-generated code with a brief description of what is in the clip.
All very quickly, as modern action cameras offer to cut up video in 3,5 or 10 minute clips.

What would your ideal footage prepping work flow look like?

Maybe I need to make a video about what I would consider an ideal workflow.
I wish I had more time to do things like this.

First of all, I'd like to praise you for the method you're using in terms of workflow. Being rigourous in your approach saves you from headaches further down the editing process!

Like Ann, suggested, you may use Adobe Bridge to help you in that endeavour, although Adobe used to have Prelude for this purpose. Unfortunately, this has been divested, apparently because not enough users were actively using it and Adobe decided to focus their limited development capability to other apps. But Bridge also offers this functionality.

If you're on Windows, a tool I frequently use to copy, rename and synchronize disks is called Total Commander (www.ghisler.com).

Hope this helps.

Prelude is still here and is perfectly suited for the task:

You're right! It didn't show up with the video apps, for some weird reason. I haven't used it, as Bridge and Total Commander work for me...

Have you tried the Bridge?

I found a much older post about this – and asked my question there already – but short answer: I've tried Bridge, and I just can't get it to work sufficiently to be useful. I can't scrub videos, for example, without terrible lag, skipping frames, etc.

You have mentioned Bridge a few times here in the forum: am I missing something? Does it work well for you?

The other Bridge functionality is great, but I just can't view the clips, so it's kinda useless. Opening each one up in Quicktime to view it properly really slows down the workflow.

I also can't seem to find much of any metadata – clip length, resolution, frame rate, etc. – in Bridge. The Video metadata panel fields are all blank.
