Question

Render and replace --> markers show up in original not in replaced clip.

Hi,

I used the render and replace function on a whole project where the source material is a bunch of different low res file formats. (mp4 to dnx)

When I add markers with comments to the new replaced clips they show up in the clip on the timeline. But when I search for them in the project they show up in the original MP4 files but not in the new DNX ones. Also the markers are at a completely different location in the MP4 files.

I want to keep the link with the original files but they don't need the markers in there because I need to create search bins with the clips containing relevant markers.

Any way to solve this?

Thanks!

What is the goal with the Render & Replace operation?

I work with archival. 800 files, roughly 1500 hours of footage. proxy not an option as it takes the whole file. So I made rough selects based on the MP4. Those I replaced and rendered to an edit friendly codec.

Working with the project based on the render and replaced files is too risky as it is very buggy. Prob. because the original MP4's sometimes contain errors and mixed frame rates. When I restore sometimes is does not work I get a complete different clip from the original.

I imported all the rendered files into a new project, I lose the connection with the original MP4 but so far that seems the only solution.

Now I'm struggeling with metadata keywords. Was hoping to make subclips from the rough selects and add keywords. But the keywords apply to the whole master clip. Working on it for a whole day... the whole metadata + subclip seems to be very limited and quite useless to me...

    Now looking at resolve...

There are 2 major ways to set clip markers. In PR Preferences -> Media you can set the XMP to save clip markers to the clip file.  If not selected, clip markers are saved to the project file. I do not know if this helps with a replaced clip. My guess is no. But I would set up a small test project and see if this makes a difference.

Yes I tried this already, no luck.

I stared in resolve now. Did many doc features in PP but my usual workflow doesn't work with this archival project.

Have to say the metadata keyword situation could use some revisions... some hints from FCPX and Resolve perhaps?
