Question

Replacing dark windows - interior shots

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone has a technique for replacing dark windows with a sunny sky.

I've shot some real estate interior video, however a friend was only available at night, so the windows are basically black.

Is there a mask tool, or "colour replace" tool, or some sort of green screen technique that can be applied here?

The room is fine, but the windows are really dark. Hoping to do an easy replacement to show sky through the windows, if it's even possible.

Thanks so much in advance for all your help and suggestions!!

You would likely need to hand mask the shot and track. If it's a locked off shot then you'll have a way easier time but you haven't said anything about your shot other than that it's a night shot indoors. That said, based on your question I would guess it moves as you want to key out the window. In such a case you could apply a levels filter on a copy of the footage, crush the blacks and then mask the general area and move the mask as needed. Then use that black area as your matte for your footage under it, which would be the sky you want to put in. Requiring parallax can be removed by simply using a nice bright blue sky with minimal texture in it (or gradient). It would probably pass. If not, After effects is what you want or hand animate the parallax if you can do it by eye.

You could have another video on V2, with a mask applied so it only 'showed' in the window space on V1. Though if the camera pans during the shot, it would be a bit more work to track that motion.
