A prproj. file got permanently deleted by accident from my Mac desktop. I got some data recovery software which couldn't find the prproj. file -- but it did find a .prmdc2 file. I recovered that, changed the extension to "prproj.", and tried to open it in Premiere. However, it says "the project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened". Is there anything I can do to save this project file, or is it a goner forever?

These are cache files. So the answer is no.
Don't you have auto save or a back-up or saved to the cloud?

The entire folder got permanently deleted -- auto save files and all. Any suggestions for a data recovery software that actually works?

I know it doesn't help you now, but autosaves and backups should be on a different drive than the project and media files.

There are professional data recovery services that might be able to help you, but unfortunately, not everything is recoverable.

Hi there,
Welcome to the community! As our Experts suggested earlier, it's not possible to rebuild the project file from the cache data. If Auto Save was enabled, you may try searching for any of the recent auto saves for that project to see if it helps.
Thanks,
Sumeet
