Separating Audio from Video

I filmed some shots with a camera and the audio from those shots is not necessary so I was planning on playing the audio from a different shot over it. I can't figure out how to separate the audio from video in the timeline. Should I import the files differently or is there a tool I'm missing?

How is it done when you only want to remove a small segment of audio in a clip, such as when a bystander says something stupid? Thanks.

Unlink as above, cut out the unwanted audio, and replace it with background noise from another part of the clip. Use audio

    transitions if necessary.

An alternate method is to keyframe the audiio volume and add the background audio to another track and keyframe its volume.
