Standard Size of Clips in a Compilation

I'm importing clips that show up as different sizes in the timeline. I can "Scale to Frame Size" still images but this doesn't work with video clips. There must be an easy way to make the clips a standard size, i.e. fill the screen without distorting them. Thanks for any advice.

Note also that the default behaviour for scaling is available in Edit > Preferences > Media > Default Media Scaling:

There is no right or wrong way to do it - it just depends on what you have, what you are trying to achieve and what is most convenient.

"Scale to Frame Size" works on video clips as well as stills.

If you use this option the clip should scale to the size of your sequence and the "Scale" parameter in the Motion effects will stay at 100%.

If you use "Set to Frame Size" then the clip should also scale up to the sequence size but it uses the scale parameter to do this (eg. it could go to 150%).

Thank you, Mike. That makes perfect sense, though it seems to work with some clips but not all. Maybe the sizes are just too different in some cases? I will keep experimenting.

    Patrick:

Have you tried going to the Scale parameter in the Effect Controls tab and increasing the Scale value as needed?

Or have you tried double-clicking on a clip in the Project tab and then using a click and drag on one of the Scale handles?

Either of these approaches should work for the clips that do not appear to scale as expected when using Scale to Frame Size and/or Set to Frame Size.

The problem with video clips is if you upscale them, it's often not particularly pretty. So in the project panel, in list mode, check what frame-sizes you have. Use one of the smaller ones (hopefully at least 1280x720) to make the sequence, and set in your preferences that you want set to framesize as a default.

Then anything you drag onto that sequence will be displayed at the frame-size of the sequence.

Sincere thanks for the response. By project panel, I assume you mean the list of imported clips, but I don't see where I set a preference for a standard size in the time line. Sorry to be a bother and, again, I appreciate your help.

In Neil's suggestion, pick the clip you will use for the standard. I agree with him that you want to avoid scaling up. Drag one of those videos to the new icon, and it will create a sequence with that size. When you place other videos that are the same size, they will fit. When you place a video that is larger, you decide what method to use to achieve the effect you want.

If they are all "widescreen" with a square par, you can just use the scale to frame size. Or before applying any scale they may appear zoomed in and you can use a custom scale (in the effects panel) to compose the frame as you want.
