Stuck Ruler On Screen

Whilst using the ruler tool once I create the line and leave it on. Then when I want to take it off it won't let me select the ruler line and so can't drag it off the screen. The only way I've found to stop this is by resetting my system preferences but don't want to do that every time I have to use a ruler. Is there a way to fix this?

I see in the image that you are currently using the Type tool. What if you switch to the Selection tool (arrow) and drag the guide to the left or right, does that work?
