Question

Syncing audio to footage before or after editing?

Hi, as the title says I would like to know what are the best practices when it comes to syncing audio (recorded externally) to video. Should I sync every clip (every shot and every take) separately, then export as new video and import it with synced audio? Or can I edit my movie with unsynced audio (only audio from camera) and when done sync every used clip to audio? What are the best practices?

Thanks!

Hello vhernandezurbina,

Most people will recommend you sync audio first before editing.

The first workflow you have proposed is not great (syncing every clip, exporting new video, re-importing); though it will work, it requires you recompress your source footage and also makes it difficult to reference camera and audio original should you ever need to.

The second workflow also isn't great as it is likely to affect your assessment of material (particularly sound) ... if you don't know what it really sounds like.

R Neil Haugen's suggestion is one common workflow you should consider. Some further searches should provide necessary elaboration.

That's what the multicam process is used for in Premiere. It's not just "multi-camera", but any work with external audio.

In fact, you can have a bin with 20 video clips and twenty audio clips, one audio for each video clip, select all, "Create multicam" ... and you'll get 20 "multicam" sequences, which you would then simply use as clips.

Do NOT use the "merge" function, as that has all sorts of limiations and problems.

Everyone's mileage always varies ...
