Question

Transcoding AVCHD to mp4

As recommended by the community, I have attempted to used HandBrake to transcode as in the subject.  Unfortunately, my download and start of HandBrake reveals mostly a dark area to place my video with no access to the functions at the top.  I have uninstalled and installed twice.  On the side are 2 dialog boxes to select a single video or another for more than one.  The default output is revealed as mp4. When placing my video into the darkened area, the transcoding begins starting at the beginning then progressing to 50.

When I check the output, only part of the transcoded mp4 file results.  I have tried this several times with the same result.  How can I set HandBrake to transcode my whole AVCHD file.

Is your AVCHD file part of a spanned clip?

Shutter doesn't tend to reject healthy AVCHD clips.

I second Kevin's suggestion: Shutter encoder.

Unfortunately, I downloaded and tried Shutter Encoder after a $10 US
donation. I found that the programs appeared to process the AVCHD files
with an unsuccessful output. The program appears to have no way of
recognizing or transcoding AVCHD apart from identifying the m2ts etc. files
as it progresses to show an appearance of processing each portion of the
input file. I found no mention of AVCHD in the program.

Perhaps I am wrong. If so, feedback is appreciated.

I'm with Kevin. Handbrake is fully capable ... but uses a rather outdated UI format, and is pretty hard to figure out at first.

ShutterEncoder uses the same open-source coding ... all based off of ffmpeg ... but has a much easier to understand UI than either Handbrake or ffmpeg.

    Hi John,

You can also try Shutter Encoder, which has a lot more options for transcoding. I like to transcode to ProRes LT. See if that works for you.

    Thanks,
    Kevin
