Transcript & Production

Hello,

I'm working on reels within a Premiere Pro Production so basically I have my rushs inside specifics projects as I have my editing sequences in specifics projects.

I noticed something those last days and that's about the transcription feature. I can't edit the text in my transcript panel to make corrections. I thought about the fact that my source clip is in a specific projet and my editing sequence in another one but I don't really know what's the trouble there.

Is there something I'm not aware of with this workflow ?

Thanks for your support,

Correct answer Fokse

Hey,

Are there people who know how to deal with the transcription troubles I'm getting into on a daily basis because it's embarassing to be honest. I make subtitles very often for reels and I basically need that transcription works perfectly but that's not the case at all.

I understood that as my source clip is in another project within the production (I did that just to be in line with the production workflow) I can't edit my transcription in my current project. My current workflow is the following one :

- One project which contains my editing sequence (derush / editing)
- One project which contains all the clips (no sequence items there)
- One project which contains musics, another one for images and a last one for SFX
- One project which contains several stuff I use frequently for this specific client

Maybe, it will be clearer for you knowing that. So the only clear solution I see is to generate a static transcript once I finish doing cuts and everything in my timeline. Even doing that, I noticed that sometimes it doesn't seem to work properly or there is something, a detail I'm missing.

The other solution would be to create a sequence in my source clip project (where there is no sequence items), putting my source clip in the timeline and create the text-based editing transcription there and it will be sync-down to my other project. The thing is if I'm doing that, I'm not following my current production workflow to have source clips in specifics projects without any sequence items.

The example I have in mind is that I joined two different video clips with theirs audios together in one edit and I need a transcription for this edit which is basically one reel (1 source audio + 1 another one from another source clip). I made a static transcription and I wasn't even able to edit it so I have to update all of my subtitles manually to correct the text. - it's not really efficient. Am I missing something there ?

I also noticed that the result of the static transcription is really different if I choose the "Dialogues" option or just the audio track I wan't to transcribe.

Thanks for support,

Updating the post - That could be helpful for others who could get into similar troubles.

I just reorganized my production in order to get all the source clips back in my editing projects as it's not anything big like a filmmaking production and so on. So, it should solve the problem about the transcription considering my workflow.

I'm still curious to know people's workflows with production as I feel like this is just not really convenient to get all of the source clips in another project without any sequence items within it.

By the way, I noticed that sometimes the static transcription is not working at the first try if we already have our source clip transcripted with the text-based editing transcription. I had to try again and it ended up working and I was able to edit my static transcription to correct some texts here and there.

To be continued...

Hi @Fokse , @roheeni_5696 is correct. The source clip is considered the source of truth for the transcript, and so you can't edit the transcript in a sequence if the source clip lives in a different project in the production.

You can do a Reveal in Project, find the clip, and fix the transcription on the source clip. It will then automatically "sync" down to your timeline project.

If you are mostly done editing and just wanting to clean up the transcript for creating captions, then you could click the "..." menu in the transcript window (with the sequence open) and choose "Generate static transcript". This puts the sequence in a mode where it ignores the source transcripts and instead renders out your audio as it is at that moment and transcribes that audio. Then you can freely edit that transcript without worrying about the source clips. But of course, it's no longer a "live" transcript and won't update as you make edits in the sequence. So it's up to you which approach is best for your circumstance.

@mattchristensen @roheeni_5696,

I don't use productions, so I appreciate both of you explaining this workflow issue. I do have a few projects that would benefit....

@Fokse,

The other consideration when using a static transcription of the final sequence is that you must wait for that stage before editing the transcript for final captions. When editing source transcriptions from a sequence, those edits do get made in the source. And the dynamic transcript of the sequence (not really a separate transcript, just the resulting used portions of all the source clips' transcripts) will have any changes you have made.

@mattchristensen,

I'm sure the usefulness of the .prmi becomes relevant at some point. And then having some control over which version of a transcript is saved (edited or not). I see in the Beta, that we can now (re)import json transcripts. That is a fabulous addition.

Yes, this is expected behavior in Premiere Pro Productions. When source clips are in a different project than the edit sequence, the Transcript panel becomes read only. You can view the transcript but cannot edit the text.

To make corrections, open the original project that contains the source clip and edit the transcript there, or place the clip in the same project as your sequence. This limitation helps prevent sync and data conflicts across projects.

I see. So my project which contains the source clip was open just to clarify that point but I'm not sure I can edit the in transcript panel. To be honest, I set up this workflow for the first time using production and I followed the videos references on Youtube so I decided to put my source clips in a separate projects for organization even if I don't have much for reels on for this client.

So, either I can succeed in editing the transcription or I have to change a little bit my current workflow putting the source clips in the same project as the editing sequence ?
