Unknown error when saving premiere project to external drive

Hi there, I've been trying to save a premiere project to an external drive, but every time I do, when it gets to the end of the save I get an uknown error, and it tells me to save to a different location and to try again. It is a big project but there is plenty of space on the external drive. There are some effects, mostly overlays, but nothing too complex. No AE files. Any ideas?

Yes, it does save to the local drive without any problems.

That sort of thing happens typically with some sort of (at times very arcane) permissions issue. I know especially with laptops you might want to get the project file off the system drive, but ... it's not as simple at times as we would like.

Depending on the OS, it can take some futzing to nail it down.

If the external drive is formatted to Fat32, then the maximum file size that it can hold is 4 GB.

If any of the files you are copying to the drive are larger than 4 GB, then the drive needs to be formatted exFAT or NTSF.
