Question

Video file corrupted after power lost

The battery of my Canon video camera came loose during a shoot and killed the camera while recording. On the SD card, I have two files that are probably the components of the video files that never got closed properly when the camera died. Here's what they look like:

Is there a way to re-assemble/restore/repair these files so I can use them in Premiere? I downloaded and purchased a "video repair tool" from Grau gmbH, which says it can repair damaged video files like this, but I haven't had any success with it yet.

This must be a relatively common problem--does anyone have a solution? Or is this video just lost?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I have a credit at Restore.Media, so I can try and repair the file for you. Almost all video repair tools employ a similar workflow, but they're different in how they process files recorded with specific camera models. You can PM me the file and I will let know if it works.

Dave, did you try to use the cameras function to repair damaged/corrupted clips as i wrote about earlier or ffmpeg that JPooley_H mentioned?

Hi Dave,

Video repair tools should always provide a preview of the repaired video before asking for a payment. I'd suggest you to claim your money back.

As for the corrupted video, I can try and repair it for you. If you're fine with sharing the video, you can upload it to a cloud storage provider, like Google Drive and then share it with me. I will also need a sample video (playable file) shot with the same camera and with exact same settings as the damaged one (e.g resolution, orientation, FPS, etc.). You can upload it along with the corrupted file. The sample video may be of around 30 seconds long or more. You can take any video shot prior to the damaged one, or record a new one.

I've used that repair software successfully for files from other cameras several years ago when I was shooting more. Thanks for the offer to repair the file, but that's kind of the "give a man a fish" solution. May I ask what software you would use and/or what steps so that you can "teach a man to fish" instead? The process you've described sounds like the same process used by the software I have.

Try and add .mpg to the dat.file.

No luck there. Thanks, though.

You may be able to repair the file with ffmpeg -err_detect ignore_err -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4

Adobe does not have a product that will do so.

Some cameras have an option to recover corrupted files. Search the manual of the camera.
