voice over gain

This is such a simple question but I haven't been able to find an answer: How can I set the audio gain before recording a voice over?  I know how to adjust the output volume after recording. But my recording inputs are all in the -40 range and I want to increase the gain before recording. Thanks!

Many have asked, but Premiere only takes what the system audio gives it. I know you can record in Audition, with a track with effects set for it, and the effects apply to the recording.

Thank you! Your answer makes perfect sense to me - I kept seeing a default recording level that I couldn’t seem to budge until playback. Thanks so much taking the time to answer.

I've seen people with setups to record VO or even for use in OBS from Audition. With full track-racks of effects added to goose the sound.

Sometimes it's using the applet "Cable out/in" or something like that. I've got it installed on my machine, and it makes the output of one app or device usable as a selectable input in another app in Windows a system option.
