Voice over records a ringing noise that just gets louder and louder.

I was on my MacBook pro 2018 trying to record a voice over. I click the mic button with the speakers ( MacBook's speakers ) turned up with any amount of volume. It records a ringing noise that just gets louder and louder the longer it records. If the volume on the MacBook is turned all the way down it records my voice just fine no ringing at all. It does the same for the MacBooks microphone in an external rode mic. Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated!

It's feeding back. You have to leave the speakers off or use headphones.

You can go to Preferences > Audio and check the box for Mute Input during timeline recording, which will prevent feedback from your microphone:
