Question

When exporting .SRT, literally no file is being created

Simple as that. My premiere is up-to-date (22.2.0) and I'm exporting from the Captions & Graphics window where I hit the ellipses, and export to .SRT. I've also tried creating a sidecar .SRT when exporting the video. The video creates but the .SRT doesn't. The video is 31 minutes long and I had no issues transcribing or captioning it, so I don't know why the file literally doesn't create.

I opened an older video and tried exporting captions from that and it worked fine. I exported the transcript and re-imported it into a new file and tried exporting the .SRT from the new file and it still didn't create anything.

I solved the problem - but I'd like Adobe to know what went wrong.

There were 2 problems

  1.  Somehow in the captions, there was a completely blank caption clip. It was a half a second or so but had no text whatsoever. When I deleted that clip - the file exported normally.
  2. When exporting, there was no export error or any indication that anything had gone wrong. In fact it's not even that anything 'went wrong' so much as, Premiere didn't do anything or tell me it did nothing.

There needs to be an error saying your .SRT will not export when there is an empty captioning clip in your timeline and it should give you the timecode of where exactly the problem is. To solve the issue, I had to delete 5 minute chunks of captions, exporting .SRTs that didn't have those 5 minutes, until I was able to identify where in the timeline the issue was, and then I looked closely at those 5 minutes of captions until I saw the blank clip. Very frustrating, took me 90 minutes or so of clearing caches, resetting preferences, and more than one complete restart of my comp.

Another user reported no file created. Their OS is Mac. I am Windows. I was not seeing any problem. So I tried your "method."

When I create a caption track with the first caption empty (when I delete the text, it shows <type your caption here>,) a file is saved, with an odd name (numbers are added to the file name that I did not add). But the file is empty. This is not entirely unexpected. PR almost always choked on the first srt error it encountered.

If I put the empty caption in the second position, I still get a file, and the first caption is there.

I also tried to make an entirely empty caption track (export srt is greyed out), add a single caption and type nothing (it is filed with "New Caption" and exports srt with that one caption), and deleted the "New Caption" text (it puts <type your caption here>, but exports a file with no captions.

Are you on a Mac by any chance?

Stan

Son of a gun, that was it.. Man I really wish there was a pop up notification Error: empty text block found, even better if it jumped to it to take care of.

HI Jennifer,

Sorry for the frustration. Feel free to make that feature request here: https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro

Thanks,
