Why Can't I "Join Through Edits" on Audio Clips?

I edit a lot of music videos and I use the razor tool to cut to the beat;

sometimes I make a cut and then perform other actions so undo is not always the best option.

I swear I used to be able to join through edits on audio clips, and I'm not making any modifications to the audio clip. It's just a simple razor cut, I should be able to join it back together.

Am I missing something here?

This started happening to me today. Strange thing is, audio clips below my first couple of tracks work to join through edits just fine - but if I make any cut now to those first tracks or to the video track then I cannot join edits. I've been working in this format for a very long time. Checked the sequence that I had the same framerates and that's the same as usual.

There are places in the video and linked audio tracks that do have through edits, but I have no clue why some are and some are not.

Are you using Audio Time Units at all? This can sometimes affect the ability to join through edits on audio clips.

Are you hovering over the cut with the cursor and then right clicking?

Is the track locked?

Yes I am hovering over the cut and right clicking. And no, the track is not locked.

Some additional information would be helpful. Are the 'through edits' showing properly? If you make a straight cut in the audio, does it display as a 'through edit' or not? Is it true for all formats of audio you are working with (including audio linked to video?)

I have noticed that the 'delete through edits' (or 'join through edits') function is spotty on audio clips with different frame rates from the sequence. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't - where 'not working' means that cuts don't even show up as a 'through edit', quite aside from whether they can be deleted. My experience on this has been inconsistent, though.

When I make a cut it does not display as a through edit. This is only true for imported audio, the audio linked to the video cuts fine as a through edit.

I think you may be onto something because I am working on a different project now and it seems to be cutting just fine as a through edit. I'm guessing there was a difference in frame rate, though I can't be sure.

Out of curiousity, how do you check the frame rate of an audio clip?

Apologies for not getting back to this sooner.

Unfortunately, Premiere Pro is pretty brittle around audio and around timecode. Meaning there's no good way to check the frame rate of an audio clip.

If it's a clip with video and audio together, the frame rate will show up as metadata in the Frame Rate column in the project browser panel, and in the properties (now "media file properties") panel.

If it's a clip of audio only, the Frame Rate column in the project browser shows sample rate (which is an interesting manifistation of media theory).

In fact, an audio file will only have a "frame rate" if it has timecode meta-data. Strictly speaking (as far as I know) this is not true timecode, but for production and post production purposes it works as timecode. (It is, however, much more flexible - or alternately you could characterize it as less reliable - than video timecode.) Timecode has a frame rate and the metadata will include this. Not all audio will have this timecode meta data and so not all audio will have a frame rate.

Premiere Pro isn't very robust with audio metadata in general, and this is an example. If an audio file has timecode, the frame rate will still not show up anywhere in Premiere Pro that I can find, but the timecode itself will show up (under "Media Start" in the browser, and in the source monitor where you find timecode) and if you're crafty you might be able to deduce the frame rate from that info.

The short answer would be that my original direction was not particularly helpful, unless you're dealing with audio which is part of a video file.

which feature? "Show through edits"?

I had it turned off before but even after turning it on I am unable to join through edits, even after a simple razor cut, no other changes to audio clip

I have tried it with Wav, MP3 and video audio and it works with all formats. Can you join video tracks or is it just the audio you are having iisues with?

I have no problems joining audio trrough edits both with and without the indicator showing.

This is on Windows 11

How do you get those indicators to appear? Mine just shows the red square bracket with the arrow.

Also the audio file I'm using is a .wav file, not sure if that makes a difference?

Also I'm on a Mac :'(
