Would a DAC or sound card help me with playback?

Hello,

I've been editing a short film, and I've loaded up my timeline with too many VST plugins, because now I need to increase the latency of the audio dramatically to get smooth playback. 

I'm wondering if getting a DAC would help with this, or maybe a soundcard.

Let me know any thoughts.

I think you want a hardware accelerated digital sound processor (DSP).

Avid has their HDX cards but they cost $4000.00. In your case going from a quad core to a sixteen core CPU might be a better option.
