ENABLE CLIP DURATIONS ON THE TIMELINE

Long time Media Composer editor here. I've edited tons of TV series. Recently swtiched to Premiere Pro and cannot believe the software won't allow me to see the clip durations on the timeline. It's very important for quickly gauging pace and assessing an edit. This software seems to have so many optinons and bells and whistles, but his BASIC editorial control of seeing the clip duration of each clip on the timeline is essential. Until they have this, it's kind of hard to take this software seriously as an editor. At its core, editorial is about pacing, and this software does not give me the very very very basic tool of seeing my clip durations.

@Adam3486246607au Thanks for sharing this, I'll make sure to pass it on to the right team. I've used Media Composer in the past but it's been a minute, can you refresh my memory? Are you asking for a way to show the duration instead of the clip name? Or in addition to? Are there any other common things you would want to see on the clip?

I know it's not the same but you can hover your cursor on a clip and get a tooltip that includes the duration.

I'm aware I can hover over a clip to see the duration. That's a far cry from seeing my timeline and seeing every single clip's duration showing up on that clip itself all at once. I want to be able to see the clip duration in addition to the clip name. I don't know if any of your software engineers are editors, but it's a pretty simple option on media composer's timeline viewing options. Not all editors use this, but a lot of pro's do. If I see a bunch of cuts on the timeline, I want to see if they're 7 frames each (0:07), 7 seconds (7:00), 7 seconds and 7 frames (7:07), etc. Try using Media Composer for a moment and you'll see how this works. Pretty standard fare that's been around since the early days that helps an editor quickly asses exact pacing without hovering over every single clip.

One comment ... I've met a lot of the devs, and the ones I've met have all been rather active editors. Working as a dev on an NLE is maybe just allowing them to dive deeper into the weeds of their editing passion.

Granted, as passionate as they tend to be, I and they can have rather spirited discussions at times over how we each would like things to be ... but they're pretty intersting to talk to, and find out what they do for ... well, typically passion more than fun.

As someone who's not experienced at all with MC, but works for/with/teaches pro colorists, I've got a lot of time in Resolve. And always hear a lot about the differences between them.

It just reinforces that no two video post people work alike ... which always intrigues and amazes me. Your request is really solid, and yea, would be spiffy ... hope it gets adopted.

It's a good idea to have the option to show clip duration, just like other options that we already have (show clip names, keframes, clip markers...)
