1080p footage, choppy timeline playback

Hey guys,

Having some issues editing a handful of MOV files.

Footage :

1920x1080

60fps

.MOV

My machine:

i7 7700

Radeon HD 7950 3GB

16GB RAM at 2311

C: is on an SSD, footage on 7200RPM hard disks

I'm not applying any effects to this footage, and I'm not colour grading or anything like that.

I understand that it should play back totally smoothly on this machine without having to spend time generating proxies - DaVinci Resolve handles it without any fuss.

I'm wondering if I've got something set up wrong?

Edit: I should note I've already turned the prevkew res down to 1/4, turned off high quality playback.

I've also checked my system resources while viewing timeline playback, and neither RAM, CPU, GPU or disk read/write are going over 50-60%

Okay folks. I really appreciate all of your help in figuring this out. It turns out the h.264 issue was more pronounced on my hardware than it should have been, and it's for a reason that I'm super embarrassed about. I'll talk about it though, in case anybody else is running into this issue and can't figure out why.

In my Windows power settings, I had my desktop set to 'Power Saving Mode'. This was limiting my CPU to ~1ghz clock, and I assume was throwing limits on other high-drain hardware. I'm an idiot. It's running significantly smoother now. I'm very sorry for wasting your time!

As a side question, while we're here - I'm recording my .mov h.265 at 1080p, 60fps, 25mb/s. My 1 hour vids are coming out at like 12 gigs. Is this too much, and would I see better performance (at likely minimal visual loss) if I turned down the bitrate?

I would recommand you to test out different framerate according to the type of games you're playing:

for instance, you'd better stay with a high bitrate of fast paced games such as Call of Duty multiplayer gameplay, but could lower drastically the bit rate (around9-10) for game likes Ori & similar plateformers.

There is no magical number sadly, but if you could spend a few hours trying different settings and see what's work best for you, based on the kind of games you're reviewing.

Hope this helps,

Seb

Cheers for all your tips folks! I'll get in there tonight and see what I can do.

I'm also running my project files our if a veracrypt volume - any expected issues there?

Did you install any screen recording software such as OBS or any other apps running in the background ?

These were noted to cause Premiere Pro mis-behaviour... check which apps were installed recently, Resolve

might not be affected by those, Premiere does ...

Try also to clean all your media cache and video renders (previews), and better to wait until Premiere finishes

conforming all your media after importing

Hi.

You can not play 1080 with Premiere, there's something weird.

I could mention the source of the source files and a MediaInfo report of one of the files, noting in the menu View> Tree, thanks.

Resolve does things differently with decoding, and that difference shows up in performance.

In Premiere Pro, I recommend using Cineform proxies for all H.264/5 media.

That's a shame!

Do you think Premiere will be getting a better decoding system for this?

When it comes to making proxies, do you have any advice for speeding up that process? I'm making video game reviews, and so I'll have a 1-2 hour long video that I cut chunks out of. The .MOV profile I was using last night for generating proxies of this original footage was encoding at approx. 1 second per second of footage, which means a lot of extra time in my weekly process!

Could be your 7200 disks.

Your mov is probably h.264 and is heavily compressed.

Might want to consider a ssd for your footage

Thanks Ann! I'll shift the footage to my SSD tonight and give it a shot.

Do you have the red line or the yellow line in the sequence?

Also, try changing the playback to Software only by going to Main Menu > file > Project Settings > General > video Rendering & Playback > choose software only.

Hi Vis,

I have a yellow line, and it's not turning green at all. I'd expect it to cache as it plays, whole idle, or when I do a playback>render operation, but it stays a consistent yellow throughout
