AVI import failure... Mac OS Catalina

Community Beginner ,
Apr 13, 2020 Apr 13, 2020

Hello all,

I am having an issue importing .avi files, I am using Mac OS Catalina and I am getting an error "We were unable to open the file on that disk." This happens for any and all .avi files and I have over a terabyte of footage don't want to convert it.

What steps do I need to take in order to get premiere to import my footage?

Notes: I have Premiere installed on my computer's built-in 8TB SSD, my footage on an external 2TB External Hard Drive and my project is saved on a 5TB External Hard Drive. The footage was given to me color graded.

Specs:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro 2020
  • 16-Inch MacBook Pro
    • 2.4GHz 8-core i9 Processor (Turbo up to 5.0GHz)
    • 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
    • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 Memory
    • 8TB SSD Storage
    • 5TB External Hard Drive
    • 2TB External Hard Drive

Yeah, I've tested handbrake before and it can convert them but it will take about 5 days to go through the terabyte. I was hoping there would be a quicker solution but it doesn't look like it so I might end up biting the bullet and converting it.

Any chance you know anything about where I can find a download for the RV24 codec? I think that maybe what the .avi files are using.

Please use the free MediaInfo and post a screenshot the properties of your media in tree view:

Thanks for the link. When viewing the website the most recent version costed money but I was able to download an older version they had listed for free. I've imported a .avi into MediaInfo and it only allows me to view the info in easy view or text view. Both "Sheet" and "Tree" are grayed out.

Any thoughts?

When I go to the link I posted, it is free.

Post in text view.

I've combined the text view into a couple pictures as a scrolled through because it's about equal in length to a CVS receipt. See attached.

If that's the case that's unfortunate.

If I remember correctly, avi is a file "wrapper" and can contain different codecs just like quicktime so it may be a problem with these particular avi's.

See if handbrake will convert them.  It's free and it's kind of a swiss army knife of video conversion programs.  https://handbrake.fr

Post back and let us know how things work out.
