Best editing format? MKV to...?

Hello,

This is something I've been trying to figure out for a long time, but now I have a computer that can handle it so I really want to get this working:

I am ripping a DVD in order to edit it (yes, I have permission as I am editing an actor's reel). I thought I'd be able to edit VOB files, only to find those don't work well in premiere (they are all sorts of messed up). I then used MakeMKV to rip fantastic looking MKV files (nearly 900MB for a 1/2 hour show), only to find Adobe doesn't support that. ARG!

Before I can really look into the best converting options, I need to know what is the best file type for editing in Adobe. I do NOT want to compress the footage. I want to maintain the highest quality footage I can. I have tried mp4 with Handbrake and it's...okay (but it's also compressing the 900MB to just over 300MB), better than I've had, but as good as I see people use on youtube all the time. I want the best looking footage I can get.

I'm happy to buy a new converting program, but makes more sense to find out what the best format is first before I research that.

Thank you in advance.

Correct answer Ann Bens

DVD is what it is mpeg in SD resolution.

You could try to convert the vob to dv avi with AME.

Tested it and works fine.

Is DV AVI different from AVI? I have seen AVI suggested in various places, but that seems to be harder to come by a good converting program, hence I wanted to double check here.

AME can't read the MKV files. I can't import those, and AME isn't reading the VOB files correctly, so it can't convert them. For example, I have 1 episode of a show where the VOB file is nearly 2GB, and over 42 minutes. Adobe reads about 10 seconds of the file and that is it.

Please,  by all means, feel free to talk down to me because I find all this stuff extremely confusing, and it's part of the frustration trying to find an answer. Everything I find references a million things I've never heard of.

It doesn't seem like it should be so complicated, by I guess it is. I am much more on the artist side, not the technical side of all this. I am trying to learn more about the technical, but I am often lost, so, as I said, do feel free to dumb it down.

John: I can't directly edit VOBs. It glitches like you would not believe. It is just an utter MESS and impossible to work with. Other people on here have said not to try to edit VOB because of all the extra encoded info. Fair enough. So I tried MKV as that seemed to be another great way to get a high quality rip, and it was...but I can't edit that - Adobe won't even let me import that (VOB I can import at least).

Is DV AVI different from AVI?

DV is the codec.  AVI is the file format.

This is the best option for ripping DVD.
