Best Sequence Settings for editing Red 8k Footage

Starting a new feature film project that was shot in Red 8k Raw. Since it's a feature my workflow will include multiple Sequences to help balance the workflow. When setting up the project we used the ingest option to create Apple Pro res 422 proxies which is working great. This is an auto function and once the media is in the project and dragged into a timeline the Sequence settings happen automatically. However, as we're adding new sequences there are obviously many options. We want all the sequences to have the same settings obviously, but out of all the R3D suggestion options, none of them match the original sequence settings the premiere assigned to the first sequence.

My first question is why this is?

My second question is which is the "best" sequence setting in this situation, (to optimize easy highest quality outputs)?

My third question is, should this have been done when we set up the project or should we just now change the first sequence to match one of the presets suggested?

Thank you!

You can change the relevant sequence settings after the fact.

I recommend choosing settings that match the highest quality output you will need.  You can always change that for additional deliverables in the Export phase.

Thank you, Jim. As I think I mentioned to you previously, I am a recent "permanent" convert from Final Cut and have no plans of ever going back. But, after almost 20 years of adapting and learning what caused problems I have some residual fears ingrained in my consciousness. One of which is related to this issue as sequence settings within the same project in FC were not changeable once you set up a project unless you wanted to deal with constant rendering and problems in your outputs... especially if your source media did not match exactly, or you were sourcing different media in the same project. We ended up assigning our ingest settings to a high quality Apple Pro Res 422 for the proxys and then instead of just dragging the media into the timeline and letting Premiere make the "auto" decision about what was best, (in this case it sources the media based on how it was shot, for us 8k Raw 23.97fps) and it's choice is not the best one for how we want to master our movie in the final output, (in one of the 4k pre-set settings). So, we are just changing all the sequence settings for our workflow to match each other so that when we shuttle bits of the edit back and forth between sequences there are no issues. But, there is still an "error or reminder" message that pops up every time we drag a clip or clips into a new sequence which tells us the "sequence settings don't match the source media, do we want to change the sequence settings or continue"... something like that. Annoying but manageable. Thank you for all the help, I'm sure I'll run into more issues until my Premiere learning curve flattens out and matches my FC experience.

You should only get that message the first time you add a clip to the sequence.  Still, can be annoying if you plan to have a lot of sequences.

If you're not cropping at all, if you're using the full frame just at a lower resolution, you can solve this by checking the Set to Frame Size option in the Preferences.  This will automatically scale the clip down to fit in the sequence frame, while retaining the ability to scale it back up for reframing (if necessary).

If I understand you correctly, you drag your media into the Timeline which automatically creates your sequence based on your Red footage settings and when you add additional sequences you are just creating them using the New Item button and choosing a preset? It's better to drag footage into the NEW ITEM button at the bottom of your Project panel instead of dragging into the Timeline and all your sequences should match perfectly. The New Sequence Presets represent only a handful of camera presets and the list is not comprehensive for every camera. Now, you can always SAVE A NEW PRESET in your SEQUENCE SETTINGS and set it up exactly like the Sequence you want for delivery.

About your second question, using Proxies helps keep your workflow pure and at the highest quality because your sequences should have the same specs as your original media...8K Raw, etc--and you will eventually replace your Prores media with the originals. Remember that Premiere has the Proxy Toggle feature (map the button in your Program monitor's transport controls). The Proxy Toggle button will allow you to switch back and forth between the Proxy media and the Raw media. Hope this helps! If I've misinterpreted something shoot us more questions! Good luck!
