Hello,

when I launch Premiere Pro on my Mac and my external drive is not linked Premiere pro will not start.

How do I solve the problem, i have tried to uninstall the application and reinstall it , but the problem is still there.

I have been told to check where the installation files were on my external hard drive but i can’t find them on the EHD, i just have my project folders…

Can anybody help me out, it’s important and urgent.

Thanks a lot.

I made a test and it work. I used a Pen drive and rename it with the same name and format as the external drive and the program opens.

When I unplug it, the program is opening normally for the moment.

I don´t know how but I think the problem got solve.

    My system specs are:

    MacPro

    macOS Sierra 10.12.6

    3,7 HGZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5

    32GB 1866 MHz DDR3

And the Premier version is 2017.1.2

I tried using a different account and I have the same problem.

I have the same problem; I even try reinstalling the program without the drive connected but that doesn’t work either. I look in the activity monitor but nothing odd comes up.

I did what David recommends and it only opens when one specific drive is connected.

Also I haven´t used the drive with premiere, I used it with other Adobe programs (AI, PS) but not with premiere.

What are your system specs and exact version of Premiere?

One easy thing troubleshooting thing that I should have mentioned earlier is to create a new user account and see what happens when you launch Premiere there.

    Hi David,

so i tried to open PP with hard drive on and then eject it, and PP worked, but if i quit it and relaunch it it doesn't start...

I checked the Activity monitor but i don't what to look for and where

If you're not sure what to look for in the Activity Monitor you can post a screenshot of it while in the CPU tab after searching for "Adobe." This won't necessarily tell us anything, but weird stuff is usually identified because it looks...well, weird. It's one of those things that you don't necessarily know it unless you're looking at it.

What happens if you plug in any other hard drive? Will Premiere launch properly then? If it does then it's definitely not anything to do with the files on your drive, and instead could point to Premiere looking for something plugged in via USB. None of this makes sense, so I'm just throwing options out there.

I tried re-installing the program, when you do that it asks if you want to keep the preferences and i said no...

I am on OS SIERRA and using PPCC 2017

So just to be clear, you're able to launch Premiere with no problem with your drive plugged in, but if it's not the application won't launch?

What about launching it with the drive connected and then ejecting it from the finder while Premiere is still open. It's possible you'll find out what's in use when you try to eject and you can't.

Also, without the drive you can open the Activity Monitor and see if anything odd is happening while launching Pr. You can go to the CPU tab and search for "Adobe" to see all related processes.

    hi david,

PP is on the Dock and with Cmd+Click it shows the program is installed on my machine and not on the external drive.

When i launch it,the PP icon appears for a couple of seconds and then the application quits, no question mark, no error message

Try trashing your preferences then:FAQ: How to reset preferences in Premiere Pro?

Maybe Premiere is looking for something on your external hard drive and is crashing when it can't be found. What version are you on? Exact version, not CC 2015 or CC 2017. Are there any updates in the CC app? Also, what OS are you on?

If your cache folders were on your external drive then you should get an error about that and Premiere would switch to the default internal folders, so it's likely not that. Check for updates and try trashing your preferences.

If you need urgent help you need to provide more info.

Do you get an error when you launch Premiere? If so, what does it say? Better yet, please post a screenshot. If you don't get an error does your icon turn into a question mark? If so, that likely means it's installed on your external hard drive.

Is Premiere in your Dock? If so, Cmd+Click on the icon to automatically go to the location where it's installed and you'll see where it lives.
