GH5 4k - 10 bit files not working with Premiere Pro

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me on this.

I am the proud new owner of a Panasonic GH5. I shot my first project with the new camera in 24p 4k 10bit 422 colour, however when I try to play these files back / import/ grade them premiere pro crashes and shuts down.

I really need to start editing this project asap, does anyone have any suggestions or perhaps I am doing something silly?

PS My editing system is intel xenon, Nividia GTX960, 32gb Ram, all programmes are run on ssd.

Premiere Pro CC is currently installed on latest update.@

Updated to latest Premiere set preview to 1/4 resolution. 10bit is working fine now.

2017.1.2? That's the version I have which is still have problems.

Hi, I have last version of PP 12.1.2, running on MBP 2017, 2,9 Ghz, 16 RAM, card Radeon Pro 560 4096 MB....I can read files mov GH5s mov 4k 10 bit 4.2.2, but the playback is not ok....sometimes is ok, sometimes is not fluid. When I stop a not-fluid part of edited video and after play it, it's ok, but the problem is on another part on timeline.....

I tried to change sequence codecs, formats, position of files (on MBP or on Promise Raid), but nothing is changed.

Any suggestion?

Thank you

Amedeo

Hi davids,

Did the update solve your issue? If not, let us know what you are experiencing.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I still experience this issue in a very specific use-case. When I have 10 bit 4k30p footage in a 1080p sequence scaled down to 50% I only see the upper corner of the footage when playing back. If I change to "high quality playback" or render the footage it plays back properly. But normal playback is still plagued with this issue.

Until they release another dot-update, you need to leave the Program monitor setting to 'High Quality Playback' with GH5 4k media. Just "park" it there.

Strange, mine PP CS6 works surprisingly well with 4K .mov 4:2:2 files (made by GH5), playing it at full speed. AE also have no problems reading it, but play at ~10fps.

The only issue I have is with the Speed Grade, it does not render 4K 10bit and C4K 8/10bit, it only manage to render 4K 8bit. Does not crash though...

I'm working on CS6, win 10.

Maybe it's issue with system codecs?

[UPDATE] I manage to open C4K 10bit movies in both programs (PR & SG).

SpeedGrade is able to handle movies when encoded by Another GUI free software.

I go to ProRes 112Mbps, and although files are approx. 4 times bigger than original, SG is previewing it nicely (and the quality is almost the same).

Hope it helps!

Stan

I just started having an issue where all 10bit files are now only being brought in as "audio" without any video. Just shows (black). Funny thing is that last week it was working fine, well I mean I was able to view 10 bit files and scrub and edit; albeit they were laggy but now they are just all coming in as black. Even media-encoder not working now...????

Did you upgrade last week? That is the issue that happens with 10-bit files with full range luminance  levels set in camera. This has been broken since the last 2 updates of the software. They are working on a fix for hopefully a June release.

I upgraded today, but funny enough the problem existed before the upgrade. I just tried the FFMPEG fix shown in here and it doesn't seem to do anything. Same issue, or maybe I didn't set it up correctly.

My videos files 4K 10-bits from GH5 it isn't processed too. Today updating Adobe Premiere but changed nothing

After Effects 2017.2 (14.2.0.198)

Premiere 2017.1.1 (v11.1.1 (15) build)

Media Encoder 2017.1 (11.1.0.170)

I would suggest trying to re-import some GH5 files into a new project, and see if that's working. In the past when they had a similar issue with a  different camera's media, with the fix one had to re-import and I think in  a new project also. But you could import the old project file to keep the  project going. Again, as memory serves ...

Hey Neil,

For the record my testing this morning was on a fresh project created specifically for testing within 2017.1.1

Thanks!

Please read this important post if you haven't seen it.  I lost 500GB of photos on the drive that housed my Media Cache when I upgraded to 2017.1, and didn't know until today what had happened.  System Mechanic had run a defrag on that drive the same day, and I've been blaming them ever since.  Media files deleted after 2017.1 upgrade   The link to the fix is included in that thread, but here it is Avoid potential deletion of media files in Premiere Pro CC 2017 (11.1)     Be sure to check the drive that you have your Media Cache on to make sure you haven't lost any files.

My test files still do not work. 10-bit UHD, C4K files with luminance set to 0-1023 still only import with audio.

Yeh windows 10 still broken for me 4k mp4 0-1023 imports just as audio, rolled back, again to 11.0.1 the roll back work really well, shame same effort not being put into regression testing the new versions

will try on my laptop later just in case its something odd on my system but doubt it.

Do we have to submit a fresh bug report, i never got a reply to my slat one so not sure if they get read or not.

tried on my laptop, it' a totally vanilla fresh install of windows 10, only adobe installed, same issue imports audio only in this version so it's not my main system.  raised another bug report for the latest version

There was an update released today. Premiere Pro CC Version 2017.1.1. I tested and confirmed that it fixes this problem. 4k 10 bit files from the GH5 played just perfectly and did not cause a crash. In the previous version they caused a guaranteed crash every time.

Unfortunately I cannot second Apreche's claims. I just updated to 2017.1.1 and am still crashing upon import with large groups of 10-bit MP4s with luminance levels set at 64-1023. Still experiencing a low-level error in the MPEG importer engine.

I can import 1-4 files at once, and the program remains somewhat stable (though it crashes when I attempt to quit), but importing batches of footage crashes every time.

This won't help for what you've already shot, but I just dropped my luminance levels to 16-940 and recorded 4K 30p 10-bit in camera and I was able to render it PP.

Has anyone heard any more info on a fix for this?
Still only seeing audio files in PP and AE

MAT, the solution is to either roll back to Premiere Pro or to transcode the footage into a more edit-friendly codec, such as ProResHQ or DNxHR/HQ.
