Question

GPU Acceleration causes performance issue [Premiere Pro 14.0.1] in [Win10 pro]

Hello all. I've been running into this problem a lot ever since updating to PP2020. I'll be editing a video and then for some reason, both in my preview monitor and program monitor, my screens will turn black and not render any of the video. My render bars will all turn red and I am unable to edit footage. When I go into Project Settings > General > Renderer and change it from the GPU Acceleration (CUDA) tot eh Mercury Playback Engine Software Only, then my video works. However, this renderer is very slow and it's impacting my workflow and turnaround time greatly.

Here are my specs:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Version 14.0.1 (Build 71)
  • OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
    Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763
  • No Error text, just performance
  • Not entirely sure what causes it to happen
  • Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)
  • GPU: Name NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti x2
  • 32gb RAM

Hi EscaladePhil!

Thank you for providing the system specifications. I can observe that you're getting performance issues in Premiere Pro while using GPU Acceleration.

  • What kind of media files are you working with [Codec/ Format, Frame rate]
  • I checked the Nvidia's website and found that the latest version of your graphics card was released around 2 weeks ago. Check it out: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/156281/en-us Let us know if you have updated the drivers.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Kartika

It could be a bad graphics driver or a bad or overheating graphics card.

Yeah, I had insisted that when my company was building my computer with the parts I recommended, that they get blower-style 2080ti cards instead of the fan style as to prevent the heat buildup. They wouldn't spend the extra few hundred dollars on said blower-style cards, but I will keep my eye on GPU temps. Video just crashed again, which caused me to revisit this thread, and temps are sitting at 52C (125F). That doesn't appear good, but I've also seen where this isn't maxed out for this card.

I normally work with MP4/MOV H.264 4:2:0 (Full Range) type files at 60FPS. I've updated the drivers quite recently, to no avail, but will also download this driver.
