Trying to capture HDV tape footage.
Deck is a JVC BR-HD50, tape was shot on a JVC HDV Camera.
When I try to capture, I get a "Change inout format" code.
Kind of stuck here until I can capture raw footage...
How or what do I need or change?

Hi Mark,
First thing is to check the menu in the deck and make sure the 1394 (i.Link) output is set to HDV and not DV or Auto which can cause issues. Windows will see a DV camera as a DV Device, while it sees an HDV camera or deck as an "AVC" unit I believe. Important that Windows sees the latter or you can't capture HDV in Premiere.
When I do this, I power OFF camera or deck and disconnect Firewire from PC. Then reset deck output type (DV or HDV). Power off again, reconnect Firewire, power ON and see what Windows says when you power on.
Thanks

Thanks Jeff I will try the power off/on and see what that does.
I already have the setting HDV correct.
Doing this on an IMac, with CC 2015. I could go too a different computer and go CC 2017's latest version...
But the other set up is not being used so I wanted to use that and not tie up my daily computer.

Again thanks Jeff!
I did everything you suggested.
In the capture window it starts off like this:
"Capture Device is off line"
I power on the JVC BR-HDV-50 playback deck and I get this,
"Try changing camera format or capture settings".
Still stumpped.

Does the iMac actually have a 1394 port, or are you running through some type of converter?
Thanks

Coming out of the deck with a 400 firewire and going into the computer with a 800 fire wire. the cable is a type of converter cable to go from 400 to 800 and back...
Does that make it a 1394 port?

If I look at screendump of the jvc device it says 720p
Tape might contain different maybe plain DV.

No it was shot on a JVC HD Camcorder. I can see the play back through the HDMI cable that connects a monitor to the deck.
I am investigating the deck and if the menu has a setting in it that I am missing.
As I recall yes it was shout in 720P. I think that is what the camera put out.
Thank for helping!

Good point from Ann. HDV cameras can all record DV as well. Possible you have DV recorded on that HDV tape? Also make sure not to confuse 720p with 720x480, which I see all too often on this forum.
Thanks

Assuming you have changed the standard DV capture setting to HDV in Premiere capture settings? See screen grab.
I don't think there would be an issue with FW400 to 800 cable, both are Firewire = 1394 port. Not positive though. Not a Mac user, so am out of ideas, maybe Mac person can chime in please?
Thanks

Jeff,
yes that setting has been selected
Premiere does see the deck, showing off line when not power and converting "offline" to change formate when it powers up.

Also when the tape is playing back the deck has a light that read HDV so I am thinking that it is recorded as HDV.

Some cameras/decks I've used have a menu feature called "Convert i.Link" which converts HDV source to DV output

OK thought I just digitized a hours worth of video, turned out to be a little less than 5 minutes.
But it looked like the whole hours tape played through the capture window.
Then an unknown recorder error came up and all I had was the 5 minutes.
Switched it all over to a new computer and the later version of Premiere Pro. no I am back to the beginning...
Nothing is coming in to Premiere, the counter (in capture window0 is running same as deck, so I thought it was all working but I never saw a picture.
Back to square one again.
disappointment strikes!

Premiere has always been a bit difficult when it comes to capturing tape.
Might want to try http://www.videohelp.com/software/HDVSplit
(Ignore the beta suffix)
I unmarked the correct answer.

OK not as smart as I think...
Now that I have your recommended software what do I do with it?
I don't see what it will do for me to get the Mini HDV tape digitized so that i can edit this all together.

It is like you said Windows only.
Its a little program you dont even have to install to capture hdv footage.
Once on the hdd, import into Premiere and edit.

With DV or HDV capture, if there are blank spots on the tape with no timecode, that can crash the capture process. Manually restart capture past that point.
Thanks
