Help with video settings!

Does this mean you are trying to edit material that some of which is 4K and some of which is 1080p?

The timeline can only have a single frame dimension, but you can edit different source dimension footage on to it, to fit in that single frame dimension - so your 4K video will have to be reduced to fit on a 1080p timeline.

When I import them into Premiere and put them in my timeline, the position for the video is 960x540

That is correct if you are editing with the timeline set to 1920 x 1080 frame size. The position indicator is indicating the dead center of the frame - which is 960 pixels in from the left edge (half of 1920) and 540 down from the top edge (half of 1080).

and the video quality also looks like it is in 540.

In the lower left corner of the program monitor, set the resolution to Full. Depending on your computer horsepower, this may make the playback erratic.

Still having problems.  I tried to fix the position to make it 1920x1080 but couldn't.

I'm not sure why you are adjusting this. The position should not be touched or an issue unless you are attempting to reposition the image within the frame.

If you are seeing these number is the Position display, they have nothing to do with the video quality. If you want to know what frame size your sequence is set to, (which can alter video quality) go to the menu Sequence > Sequence Settings and see what the dimensions the sequence is set to.

Yes if you are editing a UHD 4K source into a 1080p timeline. The UHD 4K source is twice as large, so it needs to be scaled down to fit.

That is the centre of your footage in a 1920x1080 sequence regardless of it being 1920x1080 or 4K or scaled.

Your Preferences is making the size of the media to fit the size of the sequence. Your sequence is 960x540. Your source footage is still your source footage. You have not altered it. This is a non-destructive application.

1. Your Sequence is 960x540.
2. In your Preferences under Media you have Default Media Scaling set to "Scale to Frame Size" or "Set to Frame Size"
3. This will enable your source footage to resize when placed on the timeline for the instance on the timeline only.

Scale to Frame Size: Resizes your image to fit the bounding area of the Sequence. It should not be resized in the Fixed Effects (Like making a copy of a copy)

Set to Frame Size: Resizes your image to fit the bounding area of the Sequence using the Parameter Scale in the Fixed Effect  Motion. So you can animate the Scale in the timeline.

Hope that helps explain what is happening.

(For 4K you might want to make a Proxy for better response time when editing.)
