I can't change rendering settings

Random clips in my sequence take longer to render and preview, drastically slowing down my workflow. This is why I want to change the settings, but they're greyed out for whatever reason.

    In sequence settings, change the editing mode to custom (you may have to scroll up the drop down menu to see it):

    Unless you have a very specific reason for having it checked, you should uncheck Composite in Linear Color as well.
