Issue with Playback and Proxy Workflow - Choppy and Laggy Footage - DJI Footage

Computer Specs

CPU - Ryzen 5950X 16 Core

RAM - 128 GB

GPU - RTCX 3070

4Tb M2 SSD

All apps up to date and using the latest Nvidia Studio Drivers, hardware acceleration turned in

I hacve 4K footage from a DJI Mavic 32 Pro recorded with H265 Codec.

Using PP2021 (V 15.2) the footage is incredibly laggy and choppy during playback. If a proxy is created and attached, nothing changes, I can toggle proxy on and off, and I can see the resolution change, but the playback is still choppy. Proxy codec is Prores High res. I have tried other proxy types and the same thing happened.

But here is something weird, when scrubbing through the the clip using my mouse to move the playhead, the proxy file scrubs buttery smooth. However it you press play, the footage plays back extremely choppy again. Incredibly frustrating.

Tried using an older version of premiere (V14.9), and the issue with the proxy is still there, laggy and choppy when pressing play and watching in real time, but buttery smooth when using the mouse to scrub. Here is where is gets even weirder, IF I TURN THE PROXY OFF, the footage plays back completly fine, but doesn't scrub as smooth when the proxy is turned on.

This only seems to be an issue when using a clip with a linked proxy. If I import the proxy file itself in premiere, it plays and scrubs fine, but the original file with the linked proxy looks like garbage,

This only applies to my dji footage. Videos from my Fuji XT3 playback fine. The XT3 footage is also H265.

What is going on here? Why can't this footage playback normally with a proxy? and why does the footage playback fine in v14.9, but not in v15.2?

Sincerely,

A very frustrated PP user

Here is the problem:

Despite NVDEC support, no discrete Nvidia GPU - not even the RTX 3090 - does a very good job of playing back H.264 video, even proxies. Your proxies should be of a format other than H.264.

This is primarily a user-to-user "peer" help forum. So most of us aren't staffers, the only ones that are have the official red Adobe 'badge'.

The drones use massive amounts of compression styles and tricks, and it makes their footage vastly more difficult than most other format/codec options. So for the original media playback, I'm not surprised if it's not 'butter'. The thing about the proxy not playing back smoothly is odd. Any other effects added?

Thanks for your reply Neil!

No effects added at all. I'm realize the DJI footage uses a lot of compression, but ya I'm not expecting the original footage to be smooth, I just don't understand why the original footage would be better than the proxies at real time playback. Like I said earlier, the proxies scrub with the mouse extremly fast and smooth, but as soon as you hit the play button it stutters, where as with the original footage it is the opposite. Can't scrub through them at all, but playsback is smooth as heck in real time. And that's for V14.2, in PP V15, the drone footage is unwatchable for both original media and proxies. It must be a proxy link issue, because when you import the proxies themselves, it works perfectly. I will try to put the proxies in another location and see if that fixes anything. I appreciate the input!

Some of these issues can be a right bear to nail down. Sheesh.
