Issues with transparency of logos

Today Premiere started showing many of my logos (PNGs with transparency) as having pixelated noise where the transparent background used to be. Also, I have a small logo bug that is now darker than it used to be.

The problems happened sometime after I'd taken a PNG screenshot from within Premiere of a clip... at first in the program monitor, I could only see one particular clip (not the one I screenshot) with what I can only describe as kind of a burn visual effect on it. I'd play my sequence, but only that would show up.... until it got to a part of the video where my small logo bug (a PNG) was no longer and it played/showed normal. But when the sequence hit another part with the bug, it went back to showing only the weirdness.

I tried a workaround by saving the bug in Photoshop as a TIFF and that seemed to work. But after some more work, Premiere inexplicably started throwing the noise where transparency should be on my logos.... both on the timeline and in the bin. But if I open the logos in Preview outside of Premiere, it's fine. And deleting/re-importing solves nothing.

I updated Premiere yesterday and can't help but wonder if this is a result. I've since uninstalled and reinstalled with no change. I've restarted my Mac multiple times today. Nothing else is acting weird.

I've been able to make it stop by closing the project and quitting Premiere... but it comes back. Also, changing the scale has both induced this and made it go away.

I've never seen anything like this and am really at a loss.... Thoughts?

    Hi scottwalls,

A PNG related issue was fixed in Premiere Pro CC 12.1.1: Bug fixes in Premiere Pro versions 12.1 and 12.1.1

Let us know if you're still seeing this issue.

    Thanks,

There seems to be a general problem with PNGs from what I've seen on the forums.

Here are some workarounds others have tried:

These several workarounds have been posted by users here, I'm listing them together for use by all the community.

    ----------------

Find the original png file in the project viewer, right click -> Modify -> Interpret Footage.

Under the Alpha Channel category, select "Conform Alpha Premultiplication To:

And also select the box: Premultiplied Alpha

    -----------------

Haven't got time to go back though the thread to see if someone else has come up with this but the only way to fix it is to replace all of the .png files as .psd.  Finished a TVC this morning full of .png graphics and animations.  Saved them all as .psd and it's perfect.

    -------------------

brought all my PNGs into After Effects and saved them as .MOV files with transparent backgrounds.

If you don't know how to save with transparent backgrounds, this was helpful: Quick Tip: Exporting with Alpha Channels in After Effects - The Beat: A Blog by PremiumBeat

I then brought the new MOV files into Premiere and put them in place of the PNGs. It was annoying to add the transitions all over again, but it worked! Deleting all PNGs from my project helped too. Anytime there was just one in the sequence, my whole video would render messed up. I too had a deadline today, and spent about 4 hours trying to figure out the problem. This was the best solution I could find for the time being.

These 3 workarounds are listed in the second thread linked by Laural. A fourth one was added to that thread; nesting the png.

It has been acknowledge by Adobe as a bug and they are working on a fix.

Did the nesting thing work to you? It didn't work for me, but replace them with their psd's it worked.

Could be an issue with the new version and your graphics card. Have you done a quick export of the section to see if it just shows up during the edit?

I would try going back to 2017 or 2018.1

Also have a look to see whether Premiere is still utilising your graphics card properly as in with appropriate Mercury Playback Engine.

It seems odd that you need to render a logo and color matte...

Check your graphic's color space? It could be CMYK or something other than RGB. The "PMS" on the end of the graphic's filename makes me think it's a proprietary color space which can cause an issue.

Edit 1: Hit send too early.

Edit 2: Adobe Illustrator is a good go-to for checking color space.

These logos have worked properly for years until today.

So the color space is RGB?

Just going after the usual suspects.
