Media Pending - Premiere 2019

I'm editing on a 2017 iMac Pro running Mojave and version 13.0 of Premiere. My timeline is rendered out and I haven't noticed the issue on any exported footage. It's only in my timeline and it appears to only be one or two frames. It's as if those frames were replaced with the 'Media Pending' graphic.

Few things to consider. Out of the 20 sequences in this project 8 have the issue. 7 of those sequences were originally built in Premiere 2018 and imported into 2019. Only one of the sequences built in 2019 and has the issue. It tends to show up around transitions, mainly fade ins. I've replaced the linked media by reexporting it from Photoshop, issue remains. Full system restarts and deleting render files hasn't fixed the issue. Also been using a 2017 iMac, none pro addition, and it doesn't have the issue. Same file opened on both machines. Unfortunately I can't redo the transitions at this time.

Was hoping for a quick fix but I'm guessing I'll have to replace all the transitions and see if that's a fix. Will update if anything changes/comes to mind.

Ok, after loads of research, I've found the answer. I can sleep again.

Two answers for our two problems.

1) On the 'media pending' problem.

(Make a copy of your project just to be sure.)

For every sequence:

Go to sequence>sequence settings>editing mode: switch to CUSTOM

Go to File Preview Format: change to QUICKTIME

That should do it. You have to do this for every sequence though, so it will take a while.

2) On rewriting your project to a 2018 version (or any other).

In your 2019 project, open all your sequences.

Go to Export>Final Cut Pro XML

Do this for EVERY sequence: export the sequence into a Final Cut Pro file.

Make a nice folder on your mac with all your Final Cut Pro file-sequences so you have them all together.

Open your preferred Adobe Premiere Pro version.

Go to File>Open project

Import your first sequence as a new project. Safe as main project, make a nice bin for this sequence to organize it immediately, because it will import all your raw material and sound that is in that timeline without an organization structure.

Repeat. File>Open project>next sequence.

This sequence will be opened as a new project in your Adobe. Select your material, make a bin for this sequence, and drag the bin into your main project. Close old project (without saving, doesn't matter). Slowly gather all your sequences+their material into one project.

The only thing that will be lost are the added effects, and the ordering of your project you had before, but I am SAVED. It takes a long time, but I'm REALLY happy.

Good luck everyone! I hope this works for you too.

My issue is that i get the "media pending" screen and as soon as i try to play an imported video. Doesnt matter if its an old project or completely new one.

The only temporary fix is holding shift on start up. This gives me the option to reset the plugin cache. I can then work on any project, new or old, with no issues. but as soon as i close any project and attempt to reopen it..... MEDIA PENDING ------> Crash.....(not responding)

I have to reset my plugin cache every time!!!! i'v tried reinstalling premiere but no help.

Its not horrible to just remember to hold shift on start up. But there has to be some kind of permanent fix. Please help!

same problem here as cmatthew33. Clearing cache (deleting files in folder) doesn't work. It works 1 out of 40 or 50 starts then if i close premiere and restart it it doesn't work. Tried different graphic drivers, and different adobe versions. Since the last update, I have this problem (even with the previous version downgraded).

At least I am not the only one. But finally it starts using the hold shift on start up (tried it 5 times). Thank you for the tip  cmatthew33. It was driving me insane the last days. I literally updated the software, downgraded, reinstalled, changed the graphic driver many many times, and Premiere only worked once every 50 times (if I got lucky). So many hours wasted just to get lucky so premiere would work. So it must be some Premiere problem, I already thought it was my laptop because there aren't any reports here on the form.

Has anyone found a solution to this? I've tried everything!

I found the simplest solution which works for me every time. I just cut in the clip where the "media pending" frame appears. I just make a plain cut. It won't mess up your project and the frame disappears. Simple as that.

Still it's annoying that this happens sometimes. I thought it was just me on a PC. But I just came across the same thing on a new mac. So it's a bug in Premiere. We'll see when this will be resolve. Until then just make a cut and it should be gone.

Just to update everyone, I've switched over to quicktime for my render files and the 'yellow screen of annoyance' has gone away, but I am hit with longer render times which is super annoying but workable. Multiple nested sequences is near impossible to watch in real time but again, workable. I hope Abode fixes the problem and allows us over here to return to MPEG render files but for now It seems to be working at a hobbled pace.

How is everyone else doing with their projects slash 'yellow screen of annoyance?'

Thanks Will,

There's no way I can go to quicktime for rendering, way to slow for me,..what took about 7 minutes took 4 hours for me, the glitch seems to be random, sometimes showing up and sometimes not.

I have a music vid I'm working on that has WAY to many layers to even attempt to bring into CC2019 so I'm just going to work it in 2018. To be fair the file I was getting the "yellow 1-2 second media death" annoyance, was a video started in 2018 version and then updated in 2019. I did start a brand new file (video) in 2019 that had no problems with the media pending. Strange indeed.

I can confirm that on a Windows 10 machine, with CC2019, the annoying 1 or 2 frame MEDIA PENDING yellow glitch (typically near the beginning or end of clips or transitions) goes away when you go to: Sequence-->Sequence Settings and change the render previews to Quicktime (and then choose your CODEC).

FIXED.

Ohhh how annoying!! I have a shared screen session with Adobe which was quite helpful! Depends on who you get I guess .. but maybe you've tried that already. Good luck!!

NICE!

You're awesome sophie! thanks for grinding out the info!

I'll try your suggestions and report back, it literally appears random at this point, although it appears that it just affects the beginning of clips and if you have a fade in,..(hoping I dont' have to export all sequences,..would love if the first fix is all I need!)

Thanks for sharing your detective work! Cheers!

And did it work??

Exact same glitch with me.

Upgraded to 2019, now constant 1 sec frames that say "media pending." Most annoying glitch I've ever seen. Have done the following to no avail.

• deleted render files, re-rendered files, same issue

• Open new project, copied all data over, same issue.

It appears to work sometimes where i can play the timeline and doesn't come up. Then next play through it happens.

On Mac 10.14

I hope this get's fixed!

Hey davistetra, where are your files located in your computer? Some of our files are stored on a NAS and I'm wondering if it has something to do with asset retrieval. I may try and move all the files locally and see if that fixes it. I don't have the time right now (deadline) but I will try moving with project manager and update every.....in a few days.

Hello Will,

Excellent question. Using a Thunderbolt Raid (Pegasus R6)  physically connected to my Mac using thunderbolt, which given the connection speed should have no issues.

Great idea, although having to move all the assets on the local drive is a pain, though perhaps usable work around for now.

It seems to me more like a glitch, as the tracks on the timeline are showing a full preview, AND it only gives the "media pending" on literally a second on the timeline. We shouldn't have to move the assets! I was hoping there would be a way to "down save" the project to the earlier version though I haven't tried that yet. CC2018 will not open a CC2019 project, as I've tried that.

Good luck Will!

Hopefully someone finds a work around or Adobe gets enough feedback to patch it..have never seen this level of glitch on a release.

Hello everyone,

I have a similar problem. I've updated to 2019 which was the biggest mistake ever. My computer doesn't have the system requirements for this version (which of course I only realised when my project started crashing). I'm editing now on the computer that is closest to the requirements, but no luck. I keep getting the 'media pending message' after rendering the files.

Anyone any solutions? Next to that, the 'enable' button reset doesn't work.

Also, does anyone have a tip to modify the project into a 2018 file? I tried changing the code in a zip/gz file, but no luck so far.

I'm really desperate by now. Adobe couldn't help me.

Thanks....

Not sure, but it is possible that you are running into a recently discovered issue that does results in the Media Pending yellow frames in rendered previews. When the Sequence Settings Preview File Format option is set to "I-Frame Only MPEG" and a sequence IN point has been set four frees or less before a top layer of video's start point or an OUT point has been set at four frames or less after a top layer of video's end point. The frames between the IN point and the top layers start point and the frames between the OUT point and the top layers end point appear as Media Pending frames. This problem does not happen if you set the Preview File Format to something other than I-Frame Only MPEG. Or, when using the I-Frame Only MPEG preview file format, you set the IN point at more than four frames from the top video layer's start point. And/or when you set the OUT point at more than four frames from the top video layer's end point. This issue happens on Mac and Windows with Software-Only and GPU rendering. The Premiere Pro development team is working to address this issue. I hope this addresses the problems that you are see.

"It tends to show up around transitions, mainly fade ins." Are you using any third party plug-ins for transitions (like Red Giant) or anything else?

No third party plugins, just the good 'ol cross-fade.
