.MKV files appears as MP4 file when importing file.

When I look at the file in Windows explorer, it shows as .MKV file however when I am in Premiere and importing the file, it shows up as .MP4 file. Any idea why this is happening or why this is going on?

Does the current premiere like concert .MKV files to MP4 in order to work with them?

I am a little confused on what I am seeing here.

Thanks.

As I understand it, MKV files are a container that can hold a different selection of video, audio, subtitle and graphics files. There's a good chance that the video codec used in your MKV file is a MP4 (MPEG4) file. If you use the free program 'Mediainfo' this, when viewed in tree view, will tell you the video codec used.

What Richard said.

In Windows explorer, the "Type" column shows a defined "type," or, if there is no defined type, says "MKV File" (or in my current test where I renamed a .txt file as ".xyz") or "XYZ File." It just means it is not defined.

In any event, as Richard says, .MKV is a container, like .AVI files. And it can contain many codecs, including mpeg4. So once imported to PR, it will still show it is an MKV file (in the filename extension), but that it is an mp4 file by codec.

A sample mkv I just looked at shows the codec as mp4, but not the normal variation: it is V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC.

But the latest versions of PR don't support (as of 2019.1.3) mkv. I just tested, and my sample file would not import. What specific version of PR are you running?
