MP3 audio track isn't playing audio

So I'm having an interesting issue which I've never run into on Premiere before.  I'm running version 2017.0.2, FWIW. I'm working on a video which has multiple different video files overlayed over an audio track.  The audio track is an mp3 file which I have imported into premiere - I have done this many times. For some reason, however, I am now having major issues getting an mp3 track to play properly.  I have tried opening it in the source window, nothing plays.  I even tried deleting the file from my computer, than downloading it again; the first time I did this, half of the track had sound, and when I tried doing it again, the whole track was mute again.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on? Is there anything I can do or try to get this to work?

Work around: Try converting the mp3 to a 48khz 16 bit .wav file, import and test.

MtD's response is good, as PrPro's relations with mp3 files is cranky at best. Equivalent conversions to wav maintain quality and just ... work.

That worked, thank you so much! Weird that mp3 gives it so much trouble, yet I've never had issues before.
