Only Premiere's built-in LUTs are working. Any custom LUTs are causing screen to go black.

I've been pulling my hair out the last 4 hours, so I'm resorting to a new post. I've tried various things across forums and nothing is working for me.

When I select a clip in the timeline and go to colour it, I can select the 'default' LUTs in the Input LUT dropdown and they apply as they should. If I go to Browse and select any other LUT (cube or 3DL) the program monitor just goes black. Same rule applies in the Creative tab, where I can select any of the built-in LUTs, but as soon as I go to browse and select any other LUT, it goes black.

So far solutions I have tried:

  • Reinstalling Premiere Pro and using the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool
  • Creating a folder in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\LUTs\Technical and copying LUTs in there. They load in Premiere, but again cause the screen to go black once selected.
  • Creating a new project in both CC2020 and CC2019, importing the timeline - no fix.
  • Opening an older project in CC2019 which didn't previously have Lumetri applied. Still causes the same issue.
  • Applying the LUT to the Master Clip - same issue.
  • Switching from CUDA to Software Only in the Project Settings - no fix.
  • Updating graphics driver
  • Updating PC BIOS
  • Working from different drives in different ports (USB-C and USB3)
  • Exporting the timeline as an XML and opening in a new project.

My specs are:

Dell XPS 15 9570

Windows 10 Home

Intel Core i7-8750H @ 2.20Ghz

16GB RAM

Intel UHD Graphics 630 and Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated! My client is expecting to see something in early January and I have days booked out to work on the project; today being the first and it's already wasted!

Cheers,

Ollie

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the reply.

I think the problem is resolved... Will test further today. I was working off a new hard drive which had taken the drive letter (D:) from my usual hard drive (which became E:) where all my LUTs are, which I think caused Premiere to have an issue. It's strange though as I did copy some LUTs to my desktop and the issue was still there.

I'll resolve the case after further testing.

Cheers anyway,

Ollie

The ONLY place to store LUTs to use in Premiere, AfterEffects, MediaEncoder, and Prelude is shown in the following chart. Note, you need to make the final folders in the appropriate locations, the Technical (Basic tab) and Creative (Creative tab) folders.

Putting your LUTs here, as has been the offically recognized practice for around three years now, means that all four apps will "see" them ... they will show on the appropriate drop-down lists within the apps ... and they will be used by all four apps.

I do two things with this ... I use a prefix like "1" before all mine so they pop up before the included ones which I never use. And I have a shortcut on my desktop so I can quickly get to these folders to add/remove LUTs.

Hi Neil,

Thanks again for your reply.

I did try the official route in the beginning to resolve my issue, but that didn't work either. Good tip on prefixing LUTs to appear above the others though.

I can confirm, although I don't know the reason why it broke Premiere, my issue was casued by my drive letter changing as mentioned above, so has since been resolved.

Cheers,

Ollie

Where did you get those LUTs, or what did you create them in?

Could you upload to a drop-box type service so I and others here could test them on our machines?
